Things That Annoy Me, But Shouldn't

  1. I've calmed down a bit, but the thing that gets me is the overtly Christian nationalist messaging. I'm not a Christian, far from it, and I find the suggestion that we all need to "get together again" in a chapel in a town that's 95.9% White (with a population of 218 in 2020 per Wikipedia) is leaving quite a few people out of its "unity" message.

The three little caps in different areas of my flooring where the planks don’t fully butt up because they’ve either moved or were never laid properly in the first place. Two of them are no more than 2mm wide but because the flooring is a light pine colour they show as very obvious black lines. The gap on the main one, however, is about 7mm. I tried filling it with ‘no crack’ filler, but guess what, it cracked within half a day.

Any DIY experts out there who can suggest a solution??

Caulking rope? (stuff you use on wooden boats). Or cut a piece of wood to the same size as the gap, and tap it in. or at a pinch, glazier's putty? are you trying to achieve insulation or appearance? the putty would do the latter, the wooden insert probably best for the former

Thanks for the suggestions, Hammer, but believe it or not I hadn’t considered checking to see if I could simply push them back together. Turns out I could so I followed each one back to the wall and luckily the last didn’t leave a gap as I moved it up. I filled the gaps with superglue gel and just butted then back together.

Oh, and it was purely for appearance sakes.

How difficult it is to find a coffee mug of a particular size these days. Since the coffee shop boom every manufacturer assumes everyone wants a pint mug (or bigger) to drink their coffee from. Well they don’t! This particular coffee drinker wants a modestly sized mug - like the ones they used to make before drinking coffee became a fashion statement!!

Good gravy, they made another Fast And Furious movie. Number NINE. How many trips to the well are they going for?

The way people try to justify shoddy products - or worse still products that are not even fit for purpose - by their cheap price. Take the non-stick pan I bought recently. I’m not a wealthy man so I bought the cheapest they had. It was £7 (the most expensive they had was £32). But it sticks. Now I’ll bet you a pound to a penny most people’s reaction to this would be a dismissive “Well what do you expect for that price?” as though the fault is somehow mine.

Well I’ll tell you exactly what I expect. I expect a pan labelled ‘Non-stick pan’ to be non-stick!

  9. I bought the £32 one (Kyocera) and it stuck horribly. Stay away from T-fal (Tefal?), they're expensive as hell but amazingly nonstick. For about six months, then you might as well have bought sandpaper.

Cast iron isn't exactly non-stick though. They're more like stick pans.

Yeah Lodge doesn't even ship outside the US. I was just putting that out there as an example; I don't know any UK cast iron manufacturers.

A properly seasoned cast iron skillet is non-stick.

  15. Ah, some sporting goods stores here sell Lodge. 200% markup, but it's available.

Oh, I wonder if it's only for individual customers.

  17. Maybe Lodge direct. Available on Amazon as well.

Yeah, Tefal haven’t been the boss of non-stick pans for a number of years now. Twenty years ago only the well-to-do middle-classes could afford Tefal. Not the case now.

People at work telling me to ‘cheer up’. I must just have one of those faces, and admittedly the amount I post in here doesn’t exactly back me up, but I do wonder what these people want from me... fucking cartwheels all day??

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Strange, isn’t it, how when you’ve been having a nice polite chat with an operator at some huge, faceless corporate organisation they send you a text afterwards asking you to rate their performance and your overall satisfaction? But when that conversation is angry and you’re clearly not satisfied, they conveniently forget to send said text.
