    writing studying, poetry?

Discussion in 'The Craft of Writing Poetry' started by auntiebetty, Feb 21, 2021.

Is anyone here writing poetry, studying poetry, publishing poetry. I’m a “Johnny come lately,” to taking this genre into my skill set.

I'd say everybody posting in the poetry workshop is writing poetry by definition. Probably studying it too to some degree.

I've been writing poetry for 15 yearish. Studying it for quite some time less. Very craft intensive art.

Publishing, have a book of poetry coming out soonish. Some time next month, so I hear.

It's good to not just read poetry but read about it to, and around it. Got a poet you really like, read a biography of theirs. It'll usually tell you something about how they wrote, what some poems mean and stories behind them, and their thoughts on the artform.

Writing it? Very occasionally when the inspiration strikes.

Reading it? As above (just bought the volume I tome of William Carlos Williams Collected Poems).

Studying it? Not really. I’ve read Stephen Fry’s The Ode Less Travelled, but that’s about it. Learning / practicing / studying bores me.
