Hi, I'm a 40 year old philosophy lecturer from the West Midlands in the UK. I've just finished writing my first philosophy book (an introductory guide to Jean-Paul Sartre, which is out next year) and I want to keep my writing alive. It kept me sane this past year- between work and looking after my daughter- so I'm hoping to keep the momentum up and produce some fiction. I wrote a lot back when I was a teenager and dipped in every so often throughout my adult years, but things have always managed to get in the way. Fingers crossed I can keep going this year. Other than philosophy, I mostly read novels where the author plays with ideas. Dystopian fiction, existential stuff, sci-fi (mainly Philip K Dick and the Strugatsky brothers). Bits of anything, really.

I have a couple of ideas in my head but no idea how to get started. There aren't any local writing groups near me and I don't have any friends that are writers, so I have no clue. I joined this forum to get advice and chat with likeminded people (especially ones that would empathise with my home situation).

Thank you. My name is actually Benjamin but all the versions of my name were taken. Geoff is fine though. It’s at least a nod to kids from the UK in the 1990s.

Geoff always makes me think of Geoffrey, brother of Richard Lionheart and the perfectly dreadful John.

Yeah. I have a mind for trivia, though hopefully not a trivial mind.

Just making a new post again after an absence due to work and family matters taking over my life. I'm a 24 year old guy from West London who has got back into writing after practicing writing a bunch of smut on the likes of AO3 and now I'm spending my time to write a sci-fi novel. :)

I'm TK. I write, you guessed it, nothing! Particularly because I'm new to writing as a hobby, which would seem weird considering I've been "new" for a long time, and put alot of effort onto a long time project I have so it feels as if I'm wasting time when writing different stories.

The long time project in question is a novel I'm working on about shapeshifters and crows. (Hint, crowshifters:cool:) So yeah, that's all.

Hello all! I'm a male human who has been stuck on Earth for approximately 38 years. In that time I've managed to read a lot of books and watch a lot of movies. I'm married with five non-human children (3 canine, 2 feline). I'm presently working as a substitute teacher, attending college for a long overdue degree, and working on a fantasy novel. I also sketch and paint and write the occasional haiku (usually about coffee and bird sounds).

I've been meaning to find a writing forum for ages and, here I am, I finally did it. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing in each others work.

As a writer, "who I am" is irrelevant. But I suppose I will be social enough to answer the query.

My name is David Michael Rice. I write brilliantly, with a vast vocabulary and with clarity. I respect my readers, therefore I write what educated, intelligent adults deserve, with no "dumbing down;" no social filters; no taboos; no implication. When it comes to humor, I am a genius. Some readers have told me that they laughed constantly, and with vigor, when reading my first memoir: the memoir's reviews on Goodreads and Amazon period com mention how much readers laughed while reading the book.

I have an ego the size of a typical gas giant.

One "A-list" writer of thrillers wrote: "To Whom It May Concern: I have read {redacted} by David Rice and I couldn’t put it down. It is a cynical, fabulous, outrageous, politically incorrect, foul-mouthed and absolutely hilarious modern-day Walden. I believe it has excellent potential for a successful commercial publication and would recommend it to an agent on that basis."

I no longer give advice to writers when they ask for advice about how to write, nor do I critique writers who have asked for criticism: I have found that writers who ask for advice and criticism do not want advice and criticism: they wish their egos to be stroked.

    I am autistic.

Goodness, David Michael Rice. Welcome here. Always a pleasure to meet someone who isn't plagued with false modesty.

Thank you for the welcome. It has baffled me most of my life why people tend to not speak, nor write, bluntly, honestly, and clearly. When people imply what they wish to say, and leave the job of understanding to me, I do not hear it: I am blind to ulterior meanings. That which is obvious to nerotypical people is not obvious to me.

Thus I am honest by default, as it were. :)

I’m from the Netherlands, 61 years old and writing a story about the resurrection day of the Lord Jesus. I’m now writing chapter 60. There are three intermingling story lines. A roman soldier from the guard, who is constantly on the run for his own Legion X-Fretensis. A young priest boy who believes the Rabbi of Nazareth is Messiah. And Annas, the power behind the throne of the Sanhedrin.

I also started making video’s. Here’s one about His righteousness. May God bless everyone of you!

Who are you and what do you write?

That always depends upon my mood. Right now, I'm a clueless, pretentious, over-the-hill wannabe with delusions of grandeur. Other days I'm a disciplined, hard-working artist. Sometimes I'm a brilliant, fornicating genius that no one understands, usually after a couple of stiff drinks on Saturday night. Most of the time I'm a stranger in a strange land navigating a bizarre terrain, and marveling at my ignorance, wondering how the blazes I have the danglers to keep on this path, but determined to see it through anyway.

What do I write? My current - first and only - WIP is a sci-fi interplanetary war story set about 2k years in the future. I'm trying very hard to stick to real science as we know it; the only traditional sci-fi conceits are artificial gravity and faster-than-light travel.* (I hate it when spaceships maneuver like they are WWII fighter planes, or go instantly from standing still to mega-warp speed.) Humans are still evolving, and the planets on which people are born/live/die have an effect on them biologically and psychologically. Those who grow up on higher gravity planets tend to be a little shorter and stockier and have denser bones, for example, and the pace of their lives is a little slower. Some of my characters have "powers" that are only enhanced abilities humans already have.** Just for fun I am going to address the Fermi Paradox; remnants of alien civilizations have been discovered, that either destroyed themselves or were taken out by astronomical phenomena.***

    * I read some material (and researched it further) that said the conquest of gravity will lead to everything else humans want to do in space. Neil DeGrasse Tyson also has some interesting things to say in this regard. True or not? I don't know, but I love the concept, and it seems plausible from my limited science perspective. I was an audio guy, not an astrophysicist.

** There are people who live in the Himalayas that, over the centuries, have developed enhanced lung capacity and their systems take in oxygen at a greater rate than most of us. They live at high altitudes and their bodies have adapted, so my characters have adapted to their various environments.

*** Hey, its' my universe! I can do anything I want!

43 year old school teacher here. I've got a wife, a kid, a cat and a dog. I like 3 of the four. I mainly write in the historical fantasy genre (Arthurian stories and Atlantis) but I dabble in Christian movie screenwriting as well.

I am an 18 year old girl from Canada, and I mainly like to write horror/thriller stories, but I don't mind writing a little mystery story every now and then. I've been writing since I was thirteen and have loved doing it ever since :)
