From the Viet Nam era: Spoiler mod edit - we don't want pictures of human immolation outside of spoilers, thanks
I did find it odd that there was no manifesto or anything being distributed shortly after his death or known reason like the recent example that set off the Arab Spring. I don't know that his death belongs in this thread, only because he is only notable IN death. In fact, I still don't know why he did it, but the location suggests some grievance with the government, maybe the judicial branch.
It was a climate change thing. A news report suggested he had been planning this for about two years, as there was supposedly a social media post from 22April2020 with a fire emoji and the date 4/22/22. I’m not sure how productive this was supposed to be, but it was a statement he felt he needed to make.
So he planned it for two years and there was no That makes more sense (relatively speaking - what he did was crazy, depending on your perspective). He's being reported as a Buddhist, and there have been some notable examples of self-immolation by Buddhist monks, but that's like saying members of other religious groups have been known to handle poisonous snakes. I looked at his Facebook page, but nothing strikes me as the posts of a really radical Buddhist or climate activist. Which is strange, if he really planned it for two years, you'd think they'd become more extreme or at least different as the date came closer. Or maybe he scrubbed his posts or intentionally kept a low profile to not raise an alarm during the past two years. Which is almost equally disturbing as the whole thing.
Aw man, apparently Robby Steinhardt of Kansas got a definitive answer to the question of whether gingers have souls last July.
Apple is discontinuing ipods. no new ones will be released after this year (idk what generation mine is... but it still works pretty well)
Naomi Judd, dead by self-inflicted gunshot wound just a day before being inducted into the County Music Hall of Fame. Depression sucks.
The graboids finally got Earl. https://nypost.com/2022/05/13/fred-ward-short-cuts-and-tremors-actor-dead-at-79/
Fred Ward dead at 79. Loved him. One of my fave actors from the 80s - Remo Williams, Big Business (he played a mini putt champ), and Tremors. They don't make hunks like him anymore.
