Does anyone here have knowledge about how sponsoring a refugee in the UK works? This is what happens in a story I'm working on: Alice and Hannah are two sisters who live in the UK. They have one extra room in their house and decide to sponsor a refugee and provide them with accommodation and food. Hannah wants to sponsor a refugee from Syria. Alice is insisting that they sponsor a refugee from Afghanistan. So, my question is, can you choose the nationality, gender, age, etc. of a refugee you intend to sponsor? Also, is it possible to meet a potential refugee before sponsoring them and bringing them into your home? If so, where would a meeting like that take place?
I know this is old, but I would recommend you contact the UK migration agency (or what it is called). Tell them you're a writer and this is a story. Ask them how it works. I doubt one would be able to pick and choose, it's not exactly like getting a household pet... But I don't know. Also you can get away with many technical inaccuracies if you just write it believably. A story is a story and does not always have to match reality 100%.
