    Translating from Swedish

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by GrahamLewis, Oct 9, 2024.

I have a handwritten affidavit, in Swedish, dated 1868, regarding my great-grandfather, who emigrated from Sweden to the US a couple years later. Anyone on the site willing and able to translate a photographed copy of it? Tx

I suppose it is written in cursive? If so, I'm not of much help. You could try to contact a Swedish library and see if they are able to translate it?

Edit: There also seem to be numerous translation services, which may be able to help you if you are willing to spend cash on it.

Edit 2: I also thought of another way. I could contact my local library and tell them I have a cursive text I can't read and see if they can make sense of it, and if they can, I can probably then do a translation of the cleared text and send it back to you.

    Edit 3:
My grandmother can probably read it. I'm stopping by her tomorrow. So if you feel okay with it, send it my way in a PM and I can have her read it for me so that I can then translate it to English. Do note, though, that I'm not used to translating things. When I write, I go full English mode, I very, very seldom translate things.

I don't, but you were lucky I saw this since I'm not around much these days.

Not sure I'm much better at reading 18th century writing, it would depend on how clear it is. Though, if it's something like this I can probably read most of it. I'd happily give it a shot, but I can't promise anything.
