Hi everyone, Currently, I am in the first draft stage of a poetry anthology of 64 poems. The anthology is complete and honestly, I have no qualifications in creative writing or poetry. I studied science, however my publisher wants to see the anthology. I've tried putting poems into ChatGPT just for an interpretative to see if my poem's message, metaphor and themes translated well. Today, ChatGPT gave me a refined version of one of my poems by accident and actually it was really good. It trimmed down filled words and edited the rhyme scheme for flow and punctuation. Now, the moral dilemma. Is this the same as hiring an editor to refine your manuscript? Is using the refined version plagiarism or unethical in any way? Is this the same as using an online editing software like Grammarly or Hemingway? I might be overthinking it. Thoughts? Opinions?
Check with your publisher. AI assist is often forbidden. And wouldn't the publisher be providing the editor?
Forbidden is good. Then it's obvious I can't use it. The publisher will provide an editor but I'm looking just to clean up a bit before I submit. Thank you!
You didn't write that version. Ethically, you never saw that draft or thought that thought, so it is cheating because you didn't write it, an algorithm did. Ideas and concepts are a dime a dozen. Voices are unique as the individual. AI borrows uninhibitedly from other writers and allocates their ideas to the user's parameters. That isn't writing, let alone thinking, or creating. It is theft.
