    Here goes nothing...

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Generic Human, May 7, 2025 at 5:37 AM.

    Greetings all....

I haven't really written anything. I have no "work in progress" (save for myself) or manuscript of any kind. I've taken a college creative writing class (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and received enough dubious feedback to think maybe there's something actually in here worth exploring further. I have a talented in her own right artist friend who also thinks there's something there... but artists are weird! = )
I'm a person with a hero complex who generally does their best thinking in the shower and says to themselves "Man, that would make a great story! You need to write that down"... and then never does.
I've looked into more college writing classes as well as other workshop type classes and they all want my money are going to tell me whatever they need to to keep getting it.
Yea, I can also be a bit of a pessimist.
So I guess, I'm hear to get inspiration, learn and see if there really is something in here, or if I should just keep it relegated to the shower.

    GH

Hello and welcome GH, you've come to the right place to get the motivation to write! Entering the story-writing contests on the site really helped hone my dedication and writing skills. There's a contest open right now - with the prompt "illusion" - maybe you'd like to try your hand at it?

In any case, please make yourself at home here!

Welcome Gh. We all started with a desire to write at some point, and the pursuant of that desire will require a learning curve. Ten years ago, I decided to get serious about writing and pulled out a few stories that I had started years back. I quickly found I didn't have the skills, so I set them aside and spent time learning the process. I even self-published a 36 page booklet named "Product Development Made Easy for Inventors," just to see how it worked. Now I feel comfortable writing prose although you never quit learning.
I look forward to your post.

Thank you for the replies. I do have a question.... If I'm expected to offer critique on another's work for any thing I submit, how can I do that if I'm so far into the "inexperienced" realm of all this? What types of critiques could I offer that would be of any value? I did submit a poem I wrote, but I honestly don't feel qualified to offer comments on anothers work.

You are a reader, right? Just read and say what you think works well and why, and what doesn't. It's a decent start anyway. :)
