Alas, my name is not Ernest Wiener. So I guess I can't join. Sorry about the US produce chain, Homer, but Australia is just like Crete. I eat fresh fruit and veggies (washed, of course) every day, just like ps102, and never get sick. (Yes, of course I get a cold from time to time, but that's unavoidable). I made myself a fresh veggie salad (with olive oil and fresh-squeezed lemon juice) last night, together with a pork chop. Yum.
I've spent the last three hours doing a bunch of build out on the new place, we just need to dot the t's and cross the i's, create a couple of fake accounts to test everything and like that, get the mods in, and we'll be ready for business although there'll still be a lot to do to get the old girl ship shape, lots of buttons to press and see if a sign lights up saying 'don't press this button again', spamalopes to sacrifice for good luck, that kind of thing
Kudos to the team. The pristine simplicity of the new domain name portends of good things to come. Writingforum.org, so obvious. Like, no S, Sherlock.
Still haven't come up with a name for the new joint. Writing Forum is the obvious choice and aligns with URL and our shared history, but it doesn't look great on a tee shirt. Probably best not to over think it. Regarding rules for the new joint: Moose came up with a good list. Here's the gist with my own editorial twists: Don't be a dick. Focus on the writing. Don't break the law. Don't spam or advertise. No AI generated content... research and other things are fine, but your words need to be your own. Plagiarism, cheating, and dishonesty will not be tolerated. Don't be a dick. No duplicate accounts will be allowed (seriously, don't fuck with this one). No writing about bestiality, pedophilia, or anything illegal... it's okay to acknowledge controversial topics, but don't glorify. Y'all know the difference. No politics. No religion. Ever. Treat each other with respect. Critique people the way you would like to be critiqued. Have thick skin. Don't be a dick.
Man, I'm glad I chose to come on today to see this. I know I've been pretty inactive recently, but that's only due to personal projects I've picked up that will still take a bit of time to finish. Once that's all out of the way, I will hop onto the new site. And congrats on managing to work around all the issues, I hope the new forums will be able to manage well in comparison.
'Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign of it saying "End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH", the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.' - The Thief of Time, Terry Pratchett (Sorry, I couldn't resist). But, but ... what did people named Richard ever do to you?
I just wanted to say that when I googled Writing Forum or Writingforum, the forum actually appeared on the first page of results, which is awesome. I thought it would be hidden in some obscure manner via search engines. Haven't tried any other search engine though. And as it grows, it will probably appear at the top. I think the name "Writing Forum" is actually great, because it's easy to search for and I bet a lot of new writers search for such terms when they're first looking for a community. Edit: Hmm now that I searched for "Writing Forum" it did not appear at the first page. Only "Writingforum" did. I also searched via Ecosia, and there it wasn't on any of the first pages.
"Have a thick skin," that's good advice in just about any context and doubly so for writers. I try to remember when someone says I'm childish, stupid, clueless, and without a shred of creativity they aren't talking about me. That's what they think about some words on paper. I do care, sort of, but I think I can best cope with harsh criticism if I let my writing defend itself. Sink or swim, and don't try to change anyone's opinion if the writing flopped. When the writing flopped. Had to fix that.
That's good to see. At the very least, we will appear to anyone who searches for "writing forum" and other verbatim phrases. I have no idea what people type into search engines to lead them our way, but with the massive database, there's probably a zillion different writing phrases/inquiries that will point our way. Those won't be there with a new forum obviously. As new members join, we need to ask them how they found us. That'll give us a sense of where to better focus the SEO to attract more members. And how to directly target people that haven't thought to look for us it. Some updates: Moose and I have the bones of the new forum built. I need to talk to him first, but I think we'll be ready to open it soon. Maybe Saturday? I would have time then to hang around like I did last week. Like I said, let me powwow with the team first to see if that's feasible. Then we'll have some more detailed information. Either way, we need to get her open so we have as much time as possible with both forums active, and we're in good shape to make that happen, I think. Stay tuned.
Will there be badges and awards at the new site? A suggestion - a "Founder's Badge" - for members who join in the first 6 months
What does that cost? And Founder could be a label-only user group like Content Winner 2023, Supporter, and the others listed after the avatar. That would actually be a nice way to do it, since it's a bit more "core" than prizes.
about 15 quid a year probably -cost isnt a barrier, we just need to identify the right one and then sort it out with the host...same for other things.... this forums got about 30 add ons, but we're not expecting to need that many as a lot of the functionality is built in to xf2
I don't know why that other junk was briefly at the top of my previous reply. I tried several ways to purge it after not making a comment I had composed earlier, but it kept populating the comment field by default, and on the last reply I didn't notice it there.
You should NEVER research chronic wasting disease + deer in North America. That entire disease is SCARY and it spreads from the deer via their waste that fertilizes growth and then gets eaten by other animals and can possibly enter the human food chain. SCARY, SCARY stuff. Prion diseases are nothing to blow off. Don't you have animals in Greece? Plus the avian flu.....don't birds fly all over? You could have those germs.....
I was thinking more like the guardian banner badge that some of us have… but again that requires a medal engine. it’s another one for the team to discuss because we have to be a little careful about recognition vs exclusion. Ie it would feel nice for those who joined in the first six months but not so much to those who joined in month seven
May 16th is today, a Friday. Does the announcement mean it will go live Saturday the 17th or Friday the 16th?
At the top of the page. The banner or whatever it's called. The thing you can see no matter where you are on the forum.
Just saw it. Moose must have done that. Silly Moose. It will be tomorrow. Details to come later as the day develops.
How about call it a refugee/lifeboat badge for anyone who carries over in the first month? Good conversation starter down the line.
I haven't read the whole thread, sorry, but I was wondering how the finances stood for this switch. I'm sure a few of us hardliners could help out if need be.
