Writing software on disk, NOT online?

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Cdn Writer, May 16, 2025 at 3:25 AM.

Has anyone ever seen a software on a disk that has a writing outline?

Something that has chapter one, then links to things like characters to be introduced, places to be referenced?

Then in the actual story part, something that pops up and prompts you along the lines of "is there a conflict introduced?" and in a later chapter "has conflict X from chapter 2 been advanced/resolved?" Stuff that will remind me what threads need to be tied off or left open for the future for example.

Everything I see is online where you have to pay a monthly fee, like Dabble and have internet access. It's annoying. It leads me to ask...if I pay monthly to use someone's software and make use of ALL the features, when (if) it gets published, is it MY work or is it the programs' work?

I'm not real fond of paying a monthly fee either.....

I like the links and various menus because I can develop characters or places and when I reference them in the story, I can click on the link but it really handcuffs me to the computer.....

I want something I can use offline, save, print, edit, revise, etc, etc. So far the best method is pen & paper but it's taking over my entire living space to have all my notes all over the place. I've tried to make check lists of what places/characters I have introduced in Chapter ___ and do they need to be mentioned in Chapter ___ for example but again, I am spending so much time on the tools to write the story that I'm not getting the story done. Sigh.

That sounds exactly like what Scrivener and other writing software offers. Nothing is free though.

Scrivener is still a flat fee, right? I'm of the same opinion with subscriptions. Avoid them at all costs. Don't let someone rent your software to you.
