We are good! The forum has been sufficiently costed and budgeted. Roughly 60% for the general upkeep--server fees, domain registration, email server, LLC fillings--and the other 40% discretionary to be allocated later. There are some initial startup fees that I'm prorating for three months. After that, those depreciate and come off the books so there will be more available for other stuff. I'm deliberately keeping the fuel line choked to see where we're at.

I think the big thing for me will be the flow of new members. If we're getting a reasonably steady stream, that's one course of action. If not, different course. You have to be very careful with expansion. I've seen way too many real life ventures go tits up by overreacting to initial success.

I probably want to get to a place where the forum can pay for itself. Whether that's through ad revenue or other avenues. Theoretically we can have some kind of subscription status or premium content, but I wouldn't even consider that until we have some content to sell. Fair product for a fair price. Nowhere near even thinking about that. There is a lot of personal tax liability for me once you cross over into that world, which is fine, but it would require a rock solid business model for that.

I appreciate everyone's offer for help. You guys are great.

Kool - let me know if you get into a jam. The world is a better place with this site up and running on it.

I think what I'll do is post a new announcement later tonight when I'm home and settled. I'll call it Moving Day or something and will put any pertinent details in there. We can then use that thread for any technical issues that arise as we file in and out of the lifeboats. Like if somebody is having problems joining, or problems seeing the URL or whatever. The old forum should have active comms for awhile. I'll keep this one open for general information, but that one can streamline the inevitable migration problems.

  4. 17th May is my wedding anniversary (blink of an eye or 28 years tomorrow, take your pick. Yikes!).

It'd be cool to have that as my register day for the new forum, minor reminding the major I'd never forget either.

    Nice and congrats!

It will be an international forum holiday for us going forward. Independence Day!

What happens if somehow Daniel renews the server fees? Do you open the cages on the way out and reactivate the debate room here?

If Daniel decides to come back with the mod team gone and the forum still open, he'll be walking into a lion's den.

    Sorry, had to say it.

Spamalope ranch. All those compound names you see in the Recently Visited list have Russian IP addresses and would normally have been guillotined by now. There's like 40 of them. Soon to be 400.

It would not surprise me one bit if he did. Referencing my previous post, if Moose shuts the spam filter off (don't know if he has access), it'll be like the White Walkers on Winterfell.

Maybe for Rath in Australia. I still can't wrap my head around that. You take axial tilt for granted until it's 100 degrees on Christmas.

  19. Seriously though, I'm glad that you decided to set things up. It's the business end that could kill any amount of bumbling well-meaning writers off. We've had organizational mods and technical mods and social wizards but I'm unaware of anyone in our collective team history who actually knew about incorporation and taxes and shit.

Unless....you could be just talking a good, long game and not really be a restaurant manager?!?!?!?

I'm an engineer, bro. I build organizations and machines. You take the talent, you take the product, you take the artists that don't have the know-how to realize their dreams... build them a machine to do their thing, and then get out of the way. Do the paperwork, answer the phone, negotiate the contracts, schedule the meetings and the agendas... that's it.

It will rapidly become a great place to buy bitcon (sic), engage with attractive women in your area, and read AI generated pap.

Just to say a big thank you for keeping the forum alive elsewhere.

It's been many years since I was a regular contributor. Life and work have taken me away from what used to be a regular haunt - one or two may recall the days when I modded, alongside Lemex, Cogito and others. But I will say that the forum has given me much pleasure down the years, much advice, and even a couple of genuine friendships with contributors. Meeting Lemex in Newcastle - a city dear to us both - to talk writing, books, careers and plans is a fond memory provided by this place.

It's unlikely I'll be able to follow over just yet, but in time I hope to. Summer is coming, and (now kids are starting to finish exams and coursework, and my workload is being reduced from insane to merely stressful) I'm hoping to turn my hand back to a project or two. Who knows what advice I may seek?

All the best. As Vera Lynn once sang, we'll meet again.

Can't believe I've been popping in and out of this site for 10 years. This is sad but also awesome to see the community rally together.
