What compels you to write? Hell - I have no idea. I think it comes in waves. I've written poetry for years and had a silly idea for a story, well my son did and we wrote a silly story together. I then started seeing silly short stories everywhere I went. I love 'flash fiction' and found a load on my P.C whilst clearing out folders the other day. Before I knew it, I was on here and putting new ideas on paper (well word)

Why do you write? Again - have no real idea - I write short stories. Some for my kids, one of them animates for me. I guess it's nice to have an idea and see where it goes.

What makes you write what you write? It's the way my brain ticks I guess. I've only (so far) posted two short stories on here...should I be worried?

What Made you decide you liked to write? See above :p

What Do You Write? I do love morbid humour - together or apart - hopefully I can reflect this in a few of my bits. I have written serious stuff, but at the moment, I don't feel too serious.

    What compells you to write?
An inspiration to write something. I don't write regularly, but when I get an inspiration I start writing a ton until a first draft is finished.

    Why do you write?
Other than the unexplainable fact that I love it, I write because words are the one medium that can really communicate an idea, or transport someone to another place. And that's always my goals in writing something.

What makes you write what you write?
Again, an inspiration for a particular idea.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
Good question... it's just something I've always kinda done. I took a creative writing class, not really interested. The teacher wasn't good, and I didn't come back next year. But when I tried again later, I ended up with a good teacher, and found that I love it.

    What Do You Write?
I like recreating dreams and memories, because they mean a lot to me and I don't want to forget them, and because in general I'd say they're the toughest topics to write about. I also love nature/phenomena, like tornados and volcanos. Finally, anything I can write that really puts the reader in that place I created in my writing.

    What compels you to write?:

    Dreams. Art. Life. And pain.

To escape and tell a story. It keeps me balanced and sane.

What makes you write what you write?:

My life experience. I may be young, but I have lived a long life.

What Made you decide you liked to write?:

I liked the feeling of writing, making the characters breath and watching the story unfold before me as I wrote.

    What Do You Write?:

Anything. I write poetry, lyrics, short stories, essays. I am also currently working on a novel.

What compells you to write? Reading!
Why do you write? It lets me get my thoughts out of my without people knowing how crazy I am (only four people have ever read something that I've written:O).
What makes you write what you write? I have an interest in something and I need an excuse for research or just to spend more time thinking about it:) I've always loved horses and Ireland, so when I was eleven, I started a horse book, where one of the characters was Irish.
What made you decide you liked to write? Haha! I never decided, are you crazy? I just do.
What do you write? Trust me, you don't want to know! Let's just say, I've graduated from middle-school level sunshine and roses.

    Why do I write?
Because I love it. I love the feeling I get when I am writing something really good. While my pen is gliding across the fresh clean page, creating something that feels right to me, I have this relaxing, above-the-clouds kind of feeling. At that moment I am escaping to a different world and embodying the lives of the characters I am writing about. It is a wonderful drug that is okay to be addicted to.

What compells you to write? The fact that I forget things easily or my attention simply follows to something else. When I think of something, dream of something, question something, I will most likely forget about what I exactly thought word for word in just five minutes later. Because I like to reflect and read things I've written, I'm sure to write them down.

Why do you write? It makes me feel better, and -like I typed before- I also like to read my own content. If no one else likes to read my work, then at the least I will enjoy on my own.

What makes you write what you write? Feelings, experiences, dreams, other people's stories/experiences... daydreams...

What Made you decide you liked to write? I'm a very open person, and my writing is also very open. I do not succumb to close-minded decisions. I can write about almost anything.

What Do You Write? Almost anything lol.

    What compels you to write?
There is no single driving force compelling me to write. I find myself at odds with most posters here; my brain would not explode if I didn't put pen to paper. My head is not constantly bombarded with ravenous ideas intent on clawing their way out of my skull. Nor do I feel the compulsion to express my inner most feelings in ink for the world to see.

I guess, if I had to pick a single reason...it's something I've always been good at, and I have so few talents to choose from. I've been writing for maybe three months, and while I realize it's a long, long road to travel, I still think it a worthwhile pursuit.

    Why do you write?
I write because I love to read, and often find myself staring at poorly worded sentence or paragraph in anger, and think, maybe I could do better.

What makes you write what you write?
I write what I like to read, because if I'm not going to enjoy the finished product, whats the point?

What made you decide you liked to write?
The actual process of writing is very tedious for me, mostly because I cannot let go of a sentence until I'm at least moderately satisfied with it. What I do adore, though, is the deep satisfaction I get after writing a particularly potent line. And of course, the praise of my peers is music to my ears.

    What Do You Write?
Fantasy. As of right now, I'm working on an epic fantasy novel for NaNo thats turning into some kind of uncontrollable monster. It's great.

    What compells you to write?
I love placing all the words together and describing something new that I have created. I love how a simple description can paint a brilliant picture in your head. It's a way for me to express my emotions via my writing.

    Why do you write?
I have a large imagination and I love to create new places, characters, etc. It's just something that I have always loved to do.

What makes you write what you write?
Usually, it's personal experience and preference. For example, I write fantasy a lot because it's one of my favourite genres, but I tend to try and interpret some of my own experiences into my writing. It helps me make sense of them, in a way. Dreams are always inspiring me, too.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I honestly can't remember. I have been writing since I learned to pick up a pen, but it was probably down to the fact that I love books.

    What Do You Write?
Mostly long stories/novels.I don't write poetry that much - just on the odd occasion.

Firstly, asking "Why Do You Write" -- to me, is like asking "Why do you breath?"
I've done it so religiously that its become part of me. I couldn't imagine not writing each and every day of my life. Creating something from nothing, understanding worlds not my own, living another person's dreams, goals, heartbreaks. Experiencing things I could otherwise never see. It's an immense journey for me. Each and every page of writing is like a diary entry, filled with a part of me, and a part of something I didn't know I had. It's a tool of self-discovery. It is...simply, me.

What compels you to write? Everything the world has to offer.

Why do you write? I love it.

What makes you write what you write? My characters would chase me down with knives if I stopped.

What Made you decide you liked to write? The immense feeling I get when I finish my writing....and just look at it. And see the magical I've created.

What Do You Write? Journeys, love, friendships, heartbreak, death, sadness....everything under the spectrum of light.

"The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say." ~Anaïs Nin

    What compells you to write?
It's something in me. Dreams, thoughts, ideas. It's a compulsion and a desire all at once. The passion of writing burns in me and yet the love keeps me going even through my arguments with myself. It really is an inner drive - no matter where I go, no matter how much my world changes, the compulsion is still there, and the more I try to ignore it, the stronger it becomes.

    Why do you write?
Because I have to. I have to create a mental space that others can share. Reality is too lonely, and there are too many people arguing about what it is and what it can or can't be. In stories there is no such argument. I write because writing helps me understand reality. It makes my ideas feel solid. It makes me feel human and alive. When I don't write, I turn to vapour. My days are insubstantial and my thoughts feel like mist.

What makes you write what you write?
It's the only way I know to get down the thoughts and feelings that are inside me, and because the imagery I hold inside is so strong that I have to write it down the way I do just to make it feel solid and tangible and real.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I didn't decide. It just happened. I've been writing since I was 5. It's so much a part of me that I can't imagine life without it.

    What Do You Write?
I write a combination of sci-fi, fantasy and literary fiction. That all sounds very pompous but my influences are diverse. By nature I have to write fantasy, I can't stop myself. But I prefer to read works by Solzhenitsyn, Kerouac, Simone de Beauvoir... the contradiction is a bit of a problem for me.

I write to relax and to express on paper the thoughts that are going on in my head.
I have a need to write it frees my mind.
    Writing is my friend.
    Writing keeps me company.
I must write. It's my passion.
I never had parents or a family. When I write I'm at home in my mind.

What compells you to write? Life, my imagination. Just my plain love of writing.
Why do you write? Because I like the fact that when I write, I am God. I can do whatever I want, I can create whatever I want, there is no rules.
What makes you write what you write? Life, my crazy imagination
What Made you decide you liked to write? I'm not entirely sure, I've been writing short storys and other things for as long as I can remember. I have always loved to write. My grandma is a writer, and I've always looked up to her, maybe I got it from her.
What Do You Write? Fiction, I'm currently working on a book (see Review section)

    What compels you to write?
A sentiment, a particular atmosphere, a scene or setting that makes me feel something grand... these sit in my mind like old friends and I want to capture them before they leave.

    Why do you write?
To put the above things into (semi-)permanent form. And it all amalgamates into this world reflecting my inner workings, and keeps me assured of myself, and is immensely satisfying.

What makes you write what you write?
I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie -well, a small-scale wimpy version. I write to simulate that rush of excitement - albeit in a simple, minute form - even if it manifests itself in something as mundane as discovering a hole under a rock.

What made you decide you liked to write?
Being able to express anything I want.

    What Do You Write?
Poems, vignettes, longer pieces of fiction (I haven't completed a story. I only have these fragments everywhere). I find a lot of my writing is bittersweet, and I particularly like evoking images, creating settings and exploring relationship dynamics.

    What compels you to write?
Hmm....I think that it's just the thought that I can create whatever I want.

    Why do you write?
I write for pure pleasure. There seems to be a joy in writing for me. I just love it. It's so much fun!

What makes you write what you write?
I write what I write because it shows how my mind works. What I like.

What made you decide you liked to write?
Dunno, I started by writing comics when I was little, now I write full stories/poems and so on.

    What Do You Write?
Poems, short stories, essays, opinion pieces, trying to write a novelette/novella (a short novel).

The reasons why I write are complicated and I'm not sure I have a complete grasp of them yet, but I will attempt what I can.

The thing that always sticks out in my mind when people ask me this question is that the real world is boring. Frankly, the worlds and people I can create in stories are always much more appealing than the real world. I think this holds true for almost all sci-fi/fantasy nuts who continue to believe in aliens, bigfoot, vampires and other unproven but interesting creatures. Their existence would make the world much more interesting and fun...albeit more dangerous as well.

Another reason I write is because I have a lot of cool ideas rolling around in my head and I want people to know about them. I want other people to experience these places and events the way I do, and the only way to do that is to write it down and try to convey the same feeling in the writing that I get in my imagination.

As for what I write, I'm attempting a couple of novels at the moment and a couple of short stories. Some things I've been working on for a long time and now only partially resemble the original idea. Nothing has ever been finished. It's all fragments, but these fragments I am very proud of.

    What compels you to write?
I mainly just write poems, or songs. Most of these are driven by whatever emotion, and or event has just recently happened. I've never been able to really get the feel of writing a poem or song on demand, If I'm not too impressed with the subject I just can't get my creative juices to flow. I have wrote a few short stories, and took a crack at an auto-bio belive it or not lol.. But for the most part the stories were little things to do while bored.

    Why do you write?
I've never really been able to express myself fully verbally, with writing I'm more confident in getting what I want to say a crossed, and I don't have to worry about the Um's and Ah's. I also like being able to read my old stuff, to remember how I felt then.

What makes you write what you write?
Depression, Happiness, Love, resentment, and fear. Basically whatever I am feeling at the moment.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
Grade school drama, lol. I was always venting with a pen and a paper.

    What Do You Write?
When I'm in a weird/loony mood I tend to write songs, most of my songs are centered around one object/theme yet they usually don't make that much sense when I'm through. When I want to express myself, or vent I normally write poems, but have been known to write a few short stories bases on experiences.

    What compells you to write?
I've been writing on and off for about seven years. Over that time I've developed about half a dozen characters who simply put could be real people. I may have killed three of them off but I still want to continue to develop them as characters and see where my writing takes them.

    Why do you write?
Honestly, I don't know... I'd have to say the same as above, I feel that at the end of the day I can't end the story and close the book as it is on the characters and world that I've created.

What makes you write what you write?
It's a genre I've always enjoyed reading and know a little bit about from school/university/research and I wanted to create some of my own.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I was bored one day and just started typing.

    What Do You Write?
Mainly Political - Thriller Ludlumesque sort of stuff, I've been working on one large novel - size project for several years now. I also dabble in a little horror. I'm an average writer but I like creating all of these little ideas and spanning them out into something great.

I write because I read too many comic books as a kid and just KNEW that I could write better than most of the stuff that comes out even to this day.

That's a bit egotistical of me, but I honestly believe that. Now, this obviously will prove wrong, because I'm far from successful, but this confidence at least helps me to write while rejection letters stream in.

Everything and anything will compell me to write. A song, a warm breeze, a woman's bare breast - my muse is a whore and I treat her like such.

I guess I was gifted with the ability (and by ability I mean I was given plenty of time) to write when I severely broke my right leg and was laid up for four months. I actually got a few articles printed in a local motorcycle magazine, and then I officially began crafting a universe that I could call my own. Vampires were at the center of this universe, like they are in everything in my life, and the series I started back in 2001 or 2002 exists today.

Good thread. I empathized with a lot of posts on here. :)

What compells you to write? I am not too sure...

Why do you write? Sometimes to relieve stress, other times when I am bored or have absolutely nothing to do.

What makes you write what you write? Hard question to answer, I think its because part of my brain says "its fun, you develop new vocabulary words and it also improves your speech".

What Made you decide you liked to write? Inspiration from my friends :)
    thats all I can say.

What Do You Write? Short real life stories (sometimes it isn't real), some Fiction and letters.

What compells you to write? Alot of things, a word, a scene, often times a song, or I'll just think of a line and base a whole story around it, but it can really be anything.
Why do you write? Because I really want to be an author and I've been told I'm actually kind of good, but mainly it because I just love it
What makes you write what you write?Ummm...my mood or feelings i think
What Made you decide you liked to write? I've always thought it would be cool to be an author and as I got better my love of writing grew stronger
What Do You Write?Whatever I feel like, mainly short-stories, and a couple novels
