I thought it was also to compensate for the slowing of the earth's rotation:confused:

Daylight Savings Time extends the eveing daylight during the summer months, in theory to reduce energy usage and allow daytime activites to extend one hour later in the evening. We return to standard time in the winter months so sunrise is earlier. One reason is so school children aren't waiting for the bus or walking to school in the dark.

No, that is one of the adjustments that takes place when leap seconds are applied.

Timekeeping is so confusing to me...I need to stop thinking about it. It's like when you look at a word for too long and it starts to look like it's spelled wrong.

Anyone else into UFC? Watching the fight?

I'm skipping this one, because the main event is pretty predictable. True to form for sporting participants I support, Spencer Fisher apparently did not have a strong showing so I'm kind of glad I at least didn't see that fight.

Yeah, only reason I'm watching it is because Joel decided he wanted to order it. Have to admit, so far the fights have not been terribly exciting. First one (Machida, I think?) ended in like under fifteen seconds. I was amused that Joe Stevenson came out to "I've got a feeling" by Black-Eyed Peas. Not your usual UFC song...

Edit: Human dog fights? It's MMA...not like they're just going at each other...there's technique to it, at least.

That's a pretty ridiculous and inaccurate description of modern MMA.

edit: yeah, for the first fight Johnson missed weight by like 6 pounds. Whenever that happens, the fighter that didn't even try to make weight almost always steamrolls his opponent.

Taking aside the fact that MMA participants have a choice whether they fight or not, MMA requires an incredible amount of dedication, training, discipline and technique. I can understand not liking it, but calling it a dogfight is demonstrably untrue.

In the after fight interview, he apologized to everyone for missing weight. I found it a little unexpected. But...polite? I suppose.

I get why people say it's barbaric because of the visuals- I thought it was until I trained it. Football, awesome as it is, is far more barbaric :p As is hockey. Well, not barbaric, just cruel and heartless :(

Nah, I'm just messing with you. I know lots of people who don't like UFC for the same reasons. Different strokes for different folks, right?

    Hey, Pallas!

I take off my shirt when I play volleyball...but that's because I have a swimsuit under. Probably doesn't count.

Edit: OH MY GOD. I will have nightmares about that belly tonight...

    I don't play football, but every time I play volleyball, I get hurt. Usually, it's self-inflicted. I'm a weeee bit accident-prone.
