I like fiction of any kind, so I placed my vote on General Fiction. However, in particular, I do enjoy Fantasy and Science Fiction a lot.

I really don't have any particular genre that I favor more than others. I'm generally not that big on fantasy, but that's because I have been exposed to far more bad fantasy than good fantasy. Some people have the same experience with science fiction, horror, or mystery; the difference is that I know how to find the good stuff in the above genres, while in fantasy I've never been good at identifying what's good or bad.

Humour every time. I'm very forgiving of a writer or indeed any breed of entertainer if they can make me laugh. I'll ignore plot holes and continuity errors if at some point during a chapter I end up laughing out loud. I also like fantasy but because of the sloppy, macho gung ho way much of it is written then humour edges it out for me.

Fantasy all the way. To me, there is nothing better than leaving a world of realism and entering a world of imagination.

Horror for me. I love being immersed in the stories and atmosphere. The descriptions, the locations, the folklore; the buildup. If I had to take a crack at my favorite book ever I'd have to give the title to The Case of Charles Dexter Ward

Always have been a Lovecraft fan. In recent years he's monopolized my reading material list.

I have always been a big fan of horror, but not exclusively. Nothing like a Tom Clancy Novel or even a historical piece if it is well written.

I see ships that sail the sea of stars, distant worlds full of heroes, demons, and keys to ancient civilizations, derelict freighters filled with horrific menaces, and lands that straddle dimensions resting on the backs of butterfly wings.

Fantasy. I love fantasy. Though I remember enjoying the hardy boys series. I think most crime ones are too serious for me. I like YA books.

I like to mix it up with Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Romance. I think that romance thicken the plot and perfectly compliments fantasy/science fiction. I think the best example of this is A Wrinkle in Time

    Around..
    Fantasy
    THE classics
Novels where people fight against the system (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, to name a few examples)
    Vampiric fiction (No, not twilight)
    Historical non-fiction
    and much much more

Honestly, this list would be shorter if I listed what I don't like to read..

I have a lot! So it stinks to have to pick only one! But my favorites are Fantasy, Thriller/Crime, Romance, and Western! So I picked Romance out of them all.

Since Jane Austen is my favorite author, it only makes sense that romance would be my favorite.

You didn't put HISTORICAL FICTION on the poll! I selected "Other", as that was as close as I was going to get to historical fiction. Okay, so if "other" doesn't count, I'd definitely go Fantasy or General Fiction, on a par with each other.

I wish I could find, or write, a book that is a bit of all of them combined. I bet that must be very hard for a writer to accomplish.

Imagine writing a book where the Lead character is forsaken from their planet of alien vampires, to be sent to earth and then finds a family member was brutally murdered. Then the character goes back to the planet to investigate... and then falls (as alwyas) for the one responsible. LOL. There's your drama, crime, romance, and science fiction!

What do you guys think? I guess you can't have it all. That would be one seriously messsed up book. ;-)

Yes, it would be messed up! :D

The idea of somebody falling for the murderer of a loved one gives me heebie-jeebies.

LOL me too Vacuum eater! Uhm strange name, by the way, but no disrespect :)

Why is it that the majority of stories are usually that predictable. While watching the hero fall in love with this super sexy and mysterious man or woman, one is usually able to say that nothing good can come of it... but yet it makes an incredible story no matter how predictable it is.

Just like high school movies where the popular guy always pretends to fall for some pathetic loser girl from a different clique, and after making a complete jerk of himself finds that she is actually amazing. He then rushes to her to beg forgiveness, but she gives him a hard time and he spends all his money on a big bunch of roses for her... and yes, as always she forgives him in the end... or even eventually decides that she never liked him in the first place. Hehe.

Anybody else ever thought of that? :)

For me, it's not about the genre. It's more about the quality of writing. If the writing's crap, no matter how much I love the genre, it is still crap and I can't read it. But, if it is a genre that I normally would not choose as a fave, but the writing it absolutely stellar, the style is golden, and the story is award worthy, I'll eat it up - reading through the night even if I have to get up at six a.m. to go to work!

My favorite genre? Sort of like my favorite anything else... Whatever's good at the moment.

    Favorite Genre...

I had a bit of a time with this but ultimately I choose Sci-Fi. Star trek rules, hands down. I could watch that show all day long. Reading about it is just as good, though I do read a lot more fantasy.
