Because reading and writing allows me to forget who and where I am. I don't have to think about my life when I write and that's why I do it.
I first started writing because some of the ideas for plots and storylines that I imagined were spectacular and amazing. Now, realizing that seldom were these ideas truly spectacular or amazing-- at least not without interesting characters to drive them-- I write because my characters insist that I write, because it is they, more so than the storyline*, that are truly interesting. *Though I gotta say, the storyline of the novel I'm working on isn't half bad
I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd rather write than breathe (you don't get the former without the latter!), writing is simply great fun!
I have been writing ever since I can remember. I love words and how they flow together. I love creating characters and putting them into situations that, sometimes, would not even happen in real life (fantasy writing is my favourite). I love how a character can come to life on a page, as if they really existed. And, as the above person said, writing is great fun. =]
I write because I'm sick of just daydreaming things. I love coming up with new worlds and characters and bringing them to life, even if I have a ways to go before I'm very proficient at it. And to me it's a way of doing something with my life besides just going to work everyday and making my miniscule contribution to society.
What compels you to write? The world it creates it's my safe haven. Why do you write? It's an outlet for all my ideas and thoughts I wish I could say but don't. What makes you write what you write? My mind demands a way to express its self and I'm it's hostage. What Made you decide you liked to write? A creative writing work shop I had to take in high school. It's amazing how a good teacher can change everything. What Do You Write? I write what I know. I write because it's a nonthreatening way to let my ideas out, my voice be heard so to speak.
What compels me? Images, dialogue, entire scenes and worlds crash around in my skull at times. I have two choices. Have them intrude in my consciousness every few minutes which can make getting to sleep a pain or write them down. Why? That's a reason which has changed over the years. It began as a coping mechanism I think. More than escape. My character so much like me dealt with things far worse than being picked on by the school bullies. If she came out okay, then surely I could deal with Patrick pulling my braids or taking my notebooks. Now, it's something I can't quite put words to. How silly is that for a someone who spends hours a day writing? It's impulse and a thrill of creation. Discovering the story since I'm not always certain how things will play out is a delight. What makes me write what I write? It started off as an escape and I was drawn to fantasy for that reason. In a fantasy world there can be as little of the 'real' world possible and I loved it even for the majority of my reading. No rules or laws except those the author chooses. Want a green sky striped with purple? Go for it! I don't think anything specific made me decide I liked to write. I wrote a short story that became an entire book a year later and I loved it. The same with the next after that. I write fantasy. Swords, magic, spirits, dragons, and legends. It comes naturally to me.
Well my inner passion for writing is what drives me on. My emotions let my feelings flow into words. I like to cover topics such as tyranny, freedom, inner emotional conflicts and etc... Really that it is, I just write to put my feelings and ideas out for everyone to see.
What compells you to write? I'm not sure what it was. Maybe it was being praised for being able to write well-structured paragraphs in kindergarten, maybe it was spending half my childhood being told off for reading under my desk, maybe it was having that "wild imagination" that teachers seem to like shooting down. Whatever it was, I've been creating crazy stories since the third grade. It's just something I came with. Why do you write? If I couldn't write down my ideas, they'd bounce around in my head until they leaked out of my ears. You think I'm kidding. What makes you write what you write? Impulsivity with a touch of willpower. Honestly, I'm a horrible writer and I'll probably never be published. Call it another of my crazy dreams. But I'm always trying to improve. What Made you decide you liked to write? Probably the competitions I entered in elementary school. In third grade we were all entered, whether we liked it or not, into a Young Authors contest and told we had a certain amount of time to write and illustrate a children's book. I couldn't come up with anything until I went to sleep -- and I guess it was during that time I discovered that the best story ideas come to me in my dreams. My story won a blue ribbon, and I never stopped writing (much to my teachers' irritation). What Do You Write? Whatever comes into my head. At the moment it's filled with blood, brains, and the walking dead.
Why Do I Write? What compels you to write? That small part of my mind that goes kapow! in the middle of the day when I should be working or getting a haircut. It itches and then I have to sit down and put it on paper. Why do you write? Because I am bad at playing and watching sports, and I got a lot of time on my hands.
I write because I can't create movies of what is in my mind and it's the only way I know of describing those movies to other people so they can see the same movies in their minds.
I've written for a long time, non-fiction. When the web was new, I had a web site and decided "content was king" early on. Now I'm trying to write fiction. What compels me? I have a story I want to tell. It is just a story, nothing remarkable, only entertainment. However, I think I can entertain. I want to be an entertainer, an author, a writer. That is the career path I am on now. I write mostly science fiction, though there is a little fantasy, horror, and mainstream thrown in. Sometimes I write funny stories, sometimes I write serious stories. For the serious stories, it is easier if they don't take place in the "real" world. That's why my stories occur in a science fiction universe.
Writing is truly a compulsion for me. I never made a conscious decision that writing was something I wanted to do - I just did it. My health (mental) has been quite bad for about eight years now and my ability and motivation to write has suffered greatly, but even so, it's something that I always come back to. Truthfully, I know I'm doing okay mentally if I'm able to write. I write because I have to. When a story is brewing in my brain, I hear the voices of my characters, I get vague glimpses of what they look like, I hear their thoughts, feel their feelings, see what they're doing. When the talking gets really loud, that's when I have to start writing them down otherwise I won't get any peace or any sleep. Again, what I write is not really a choice for me, either, otherwise all these romantic stories I've got going wouldn't exist. Whether it's a short story, where I focus mostly on horror and humour, or a novel-length piece, where I seem hopelessly stuck almost exclusively on romance, the story presents itself in whatever form/genre it chooses and all I can do is write it down. Maybe this happens because I happily read from a wide range of genres. Liking writing is the same as liking reading and liking films and certain TV shows, for me. I love a good story, whatever form it takes. There are probably writers out there who don't actually enjoy writing so much but feel compelled to do it, anyway. I feel compelled to do it, it just so happens that I enjoy the creative process. What do I write? Whatever needs writing, according to my brain. Sometimes I'll have a really odd dream and when I wake up it just begs to be written down in story-form. This question for me is pretty much the same as 'Where do you get your ideas from?' The answer to both questions is varied and long. I write any kind of story in any genre - the idea dictates the result. I have no idea if any of that made sense now I haven't been awake long!
What compells you to write? Why do you write? What makes you write what you write? What Made you decide you liked to write? What Do You Write? 1. A new idea, an inspiration, a 'what if' that meanders around my mind all day while I work, shop, meet friends, often at subconscious level. Eventually the 'what if' is at the point of explosion an and the best - if not only - way to organise my thoughts and explore the possibilities will be by putting pen to paper, or fingers to keys. 2. I write because I love it, the world into which I enter, the manipulation of language to express exactly the picture in my imagination, the utter joy or naked terror of my characters. I grow to love these people and care about what happens to them.... and guess what? I an decide! Mwah ha ha... 3. I write what I write because of the person I am, the thoughts that I have, the ideas. I have a need to opinions that are not my own, lifestyles that I do not want. Just to see, you know, what it's like on other sides of many different coins. So I write what I write out of curiosity, really. 4. I decided I liked writing because of the freedom and power it dealt me. I could ask questions no-one else may have wanted to discuss, obsess over things or people that other people grew bored of hearing about, find answers to the questions in my head. Then I discovered other people seemed to enjoy my writing too, so I persevered. 5. I write novels mostly, often with a touch of romance and a large dose of psychological intellect. People. People's minds. That's what I'm all about and what makes me tick.
What compels you to write? The need to see what my ideas look like in text. Why do you write? To bring ideas onto text, flesh out the story and interact with it on a more intimate level. What makes you write what you write? I love science fiction, I enjoy writing war stories and combining the two gives me a genre I just love with plenty of room for branching out. What made you decide you liked to write? The feeling of reading a story and figuring out that I penned it myself. What do you write? To get ideas and plot bunnies out of my mind and expand on existing ideas.
It's funny, I just posted on my blog about this earlier today. In short, I have stories running through my head, growing and developing. I also just love to create, and writing gives me a creative outlet.
What compels you to write? There are stories in my head that's waiting to be told, to be shared and to be experienced. They stick in there - somewhere in the corner of my mind - and they scream at me, asking why I haven't breathe them to like. In the end, you just have to give-in, sit down and type away. Why do you write? It's fun... and painful. But don't think it's masochistic. Every great undertaking is paired with pain. What makes you write what you write? I've always been an avid fan of the unexplainable, particularly ghosts, demons, angels and God/s. There's a lot of material to be explored and reinterpreted in a different tone. What Made you decide you liked to write? I always liked to write. As a kid, I'd write stories about dragons, ghosts, stuff and even rulebooks for games I've created. What Do You Write? Paranormal, supernormal and anything weird and quirky.
I write for a variety of reasons. Mostly to give voice to my frustrations in the world and to show how I would change things if I were running the world. I also write about whatever interesting ideas that pop into my head that I think would make a good story. Ironically, I never really wanted to write the Great American Novel, but rather I would love to see some of my stories turned into comic books. I love comics as an art form. But if I were to write a best seller and make enough cash to be able to do it full time for a living, I'd do it in a heart beat. On the other hand, I also write not for fame, money or prestige, but rather so that other geeks like myself will remember my work and talk about how it inspired them to follow a dream.
Why Do You Write? Because I want to express my own ideas/universes and hopefully share them with others. And you can't really get in trouble when doing it. What compels you to write? I always feel to urge to expand on my own universe I created, fully flesh it out, add lore, etc. What makes you write what you write? I always preferred the fantasy-setting, I love WarCraft, Diablo, Dragon: Age, LotR, etc. What Made you decide you liked to write? The combination of playing WarCraft 3: Reign of Chaos and watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What Do You Write? I work on novellas and short stories on the fantasy genre.
An Author Tells Us Why He Writes... I've already posted my own reply here, but I found this at the beginning of one of my favourite books the other day and it sums up the way I feel about my stories very well, so I thought I'd post it here for you guys. The author's name is John Marsden, and he is the author of the Tomorrow series. "Writing is not a job or activity. Nor do I sit at a desk waiting for inspiration to strike. Writing is like a different kind of existence. In my life, for some of the time, I am in an alternative world, which I enter through day-dreaming or imagination. That world seems as real to me as the more tangible one of relationships and work, cars and taxes. I don't know that they're much different to each other. "However, I write about these alternative worlds because it helps to preserve them. I'm their historian, their geographer, their sociologist, their storyteller. I write them into being. I have to say I don't care whether this is a good thing to do or not; this is just the way I am and the way I live my life." Perfectly put, I say
