Yeah, that's some pretty generic fantasy. Gaming stuff is derivative by nature, and Eragon was atrocious. I recommend trying out Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold, or some of Glen Cook's Black Company Books, or Gene Wolfe, Ursula K. LeGuin, Angela Carter, Steven Erikson, R. Scott Bakker, and others. Some good stuff. I like Richard Laymon a lot. I read Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box and thought it was excellent. Have a couple by Ketchum on my shelf, but haven't read them.
Ah, I do believe I've read a book by Ursula K. LeGuin. Gifts I believe it was called? Sadly, that was terribly bland. I had asked myself what I just read and why I'd read it. Haven't heard of the others, however.
whats my favourite genre to read? fantasy for sure! especially marion zimmer bradley.i have tons of books (mainly fantasy)on my shelves.
dystopian stuff for sure...1984, Clockwork Orange, Farenheit 451, Brave New World, The Giver, The Uglies Series and The Hunger Games being my favorites. I also really like 20th century American Lit like Steinbeck, Tennesee Williams, Salinger, Vonnegut.
I used to mostly read essays, especially ones about psychology. But now I've moved to American realist and naturalist authors, such as Anne Tyler, Ellen Glasgow, and Tennessee Williams.
I beleive that Fantasy and Sci-Fi are the most popular writer's genras for a reason, and that's because they do not limit the mind in any way shape or form.
Military Fiction, Chris Ryan, Andy McNab... anyone got any recommendations?, I've not read a book in a while
Favorite genre to read Realistic fiction, and more recently fantasy. I tend not to move away from those genres, simply because I've tried many genres and those are the ones that suit me best. A specific type of story I would like to read would be a fantasy drama with a love triangle in it with the added elements of magic. I think that would be cool, and they were all working together to fight some evil sorcerer or something equally as good. (If there's a book like that, please tell me!) Basically something that mixed the genres I like best into one book.
I like fiction and fantasy based novels, but the fine line between fiction and fantasy is hazy from my reading back ground. General fiction seems to suit my style the most.
Definately horror. Ideally, realistic horror - I want to be able to imagine what is going on in the book could plausibly happen to me. I'm currently a big fan of survival/horror... the thought of running away from thousands of zombies sounds appealing to me at the moment.
I'm a huge science geek, so Sci-Fi tops my list obviously. However I also enjoy Historical Fiction to a lesser extent, though both genres are prone to authors writing on topics that they have no knowledge of which can lead to some fairly humorous results.
It's strange. Although I write mostly horror and fantasy (usually combined), I hardly ever read any of it except Anne Rice. I think Crime/Thriller is what I read the most.
I thought romance was supposed to be the best selling genre of all, what with the aisles chock-full of them at every bookstore and piles of them at every thrift shop . . . yet only 50 out of 1012 people voted for romance! Perhaps the interests of the people that are drawn here aren't necessarily representative of the general population?
I prefer horror. 8) But then again, if the story is good, everything else (including the genre) is of trivial importance.
I enjoy anything well written with adventure or character development in it... So long as it isn't romance, I'm quite good. ~JM
None of the genres I read most are on the poll - literary fiction, historical fiction, world lit, classic lit. (In my opinion, there's a big difference between general fiction and literary fiction, especially in terms of writing quality.)
Favorite genre? This is an easy one for me to answer! Espionage based thriller/dramas! Daniel Silva, and Tom Clancy all the way!! Thanks for the poll question/post! Keith
Not surprised fantasy has topped the poll so far. Anyway, I don't really stick to reading specific genres. I'm not especially taken with any genre so I just read whatever I find engaging. It's mostly general fiction, dabbling into other genres every now and again, particularly historical and mystery fiction.
Haha, I'm glad to see fantasy is top dog. I'm equally absorbed with science fiction and fantasy, however. I don't like one more than the other.
I put general fiction but it's really women's fiction. You know, not romance but books about relationships, where the romance is secondary or sometimes nonexistent.
