I'm honestly wondering how anyone would know if we got rid of it, and said that we hadn't. I mean, for all we know Russia haven't had any nukes for ages, but they just keep saying they do, so people believe them because it's not worth taking the chance that they don't.

Well, it's a closely guarded secret that's always left on trains for anyone to see.

Not exactly. ;) The START treaties for example include inspection and verification regimes, and these are actually used in practice. Treaties of this sort don't make much sense if one side can't be sure that the other side is acting in good faith.

As for Trident... well... it's all right, isn't it? Can't fully see the utility of a major upgrade myself.

Apparently not - apparently it's current systems are over 30 years old.
It might have changed since the elections, but I do remember it being an issue; and was part of the reason I voted for Labour.

I would rather no country had these weapons. I remember when Britain and America first invaded Iraq. All the reports on TV and press were saying Iraq had WMD hidden all over the country and the general public were saying 'take em out' The Sun an the Mail were showing pictures of our army preparing to go to war and save the world.
Now it appears a lot of the info was wrong and the very same people that were gunning for war are now wanting the then PM Tony Blair to be hung drawn and quartered for agreeing to the invasion and bombing of Iraq.
Now my question is, given the same circumstances information and the influence of Big Brother the USA, would the Tories have actrd differently? They voted for the invasion at the time. There were a few Labour and some Lib Dem that were against it but they were greatly outnumbered.
Same thing happened durng with the Falklands in the 80's. There was an election looming and Thatcher was losing support and she needed something to win back voters. So when the falklands were invaded it was all gun ho. The Tory press had a field day with headlines like 'Lets get at em' and joe Public was pursueded that thatcher was the savior of England and all it stood for. The fact that there were many people did not know where the falklands were did not matter.

^In an ideal world no country would have nuclear weapons, but we do not live in an ideal world. And Iraq? Toward the end I supported it - especially after I read Christopher Hitchens' essays about it in ... Letters to a Young Contrarian I think it was.

I was planning on making a scrapbook for my friend who moved across the country, but then I came up with a somewhat innovative idea. Since scrapbooking would be rather time-consuming and tedious. Why not load all of the pictures onto a flash drive (in the clever gist of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCANSvS9X-o&feature=BFp&list=FLpmAljriZgPc&index=22) and decorate a box for it? Would that be equally personal, or just a lazy cop-out?

I think it'd be equally personal, and a lot more tech-savvy. I think it's the thought that goes into it that matters the most. :)

I think it's a great idea. Thats something that I'm going to have to try. I have a ton of pictures of my son and family that I have on my computer and on the.... (brain fart) the little things that you take out of your camera and take to get prints. I never just thought about putting them on a flash drive and make a scrap book that way. I always did the time consuming way..

By the Gods, I was just on FanFic.net reading a Harry/Ron pairing. Including a sex scene of which I will not describe here. oO

Oy vey! What if in the future, if I publish my stories, I read fanfictions that pair Amos Garnier up with Robin Parrish, or Captain Helen Chert with an older Kenthew Rennald? Is that to be expected?

Good Gods...I'm already seeing a Helen/Kenthew fic titled One Night in the Captain's Quarters...

Yaoi/slash isn't my cup of tea, so I can understand your distress ;). If my work ever gets published, it would be rather intriguing to see how readers and fanfic-writers interpret my work. I'd stray away from M-rated work for obvious reasons, but Mary Sues would horrify and sadden me just as greatly.

Yeah. I think, in the end, it can always be worse. Reading a fan-fic where Amos and Robin go Brokeback Mountain on each other could not be as bad as reading about Amos falling for the author's OC that's completely Mary-Sue, perfect in every way, and eveyone bows down to her.

    That would make me cry.

Something just occured to me. Y'know how there are people who have furry fetishes? Well...Kenthew has fur so if someone wrote a Helen/Kenthew slash fic...

...Oh God, now I'm getting an image of Kenthew sitting on the edge of a bed, shirtless while Helen massages his back...

Haha! I would love to see what fan fic writers did with my characters. :D

Joel and I got pizza, and he had jalapenos on his half...apparently there was a piece of one hidden on one of my pieces. My mouth is not happy.

Just received a message with my first critique on the first post I've made in this forum and the first time I've officially shown any of my work to the public! :D:D:D:D

I love you guys! The review was informative and constructive. Goes to show that in order to get real feedback you should show it to like minded individuals and not friends who have no interest in reading or writing beyond magazines and will give you nothing helpful to work with or will sugarcoat what they think to not 'hurt your feelings'.

But ah it felt great! Keep up the good work guys and hopefully I can be as informative to everyone else here as some have been for me!

Tonight is a sad night. A friend of mine just got news that a friend of hers was found murdered. I don't even begin to know what to say to her.

^deep breath. I wouldn't know what to say either, Lilix except the obvious: I'm so sorry. And if I was in the same spot, I would give the friend of my friend a hug or send a bouquet of flowers.

This is just horrible to hear. . . .I'm sorry to hear as well that this is an indirect friend of yours. *hug*

    Damn.

I'd probably say nothing, Just be there for her. Let her decide what she needs from you. Just let her know you'll do whatever you can.

Thank you, Taylee, Cogito, and Eurlo. I'm pretty much just floored, if that explains my feeling towards it. I've lost plenty of people, both direct and indirectly connected to me, to diseases and age, but never something so violent. But I'll let her know if she does need anything, that I'll be right here for her.

Just me and a huge bottle of Coca Cola.

That's horrible and very frightening... I wouldn't know how to react to that either; it's not something I've ever had to deal with. I think the best thing you can do for her though is to be there for her as a friend would.

    *hugs* to you both.
