I'll read anything I can get my hands on, I don't have a particular favorite. Generally, though, it's general fiction.
I prefer to read Science Fiction. I freely admit that I am a huge Isaac Asimov fan. I have read all of his books to include his Lucky Star series under the pen name Paul French. I like L Ron Hubbard, as a close second, but I begrudgingly admit that some of his story's dialog tend to bore me. Something about the way it flows. However, the way he can take a scene and split it up or overlap it with different perspectives is masterful in my opinion. I have tried that in one of my pieces I am working on, I have to say, although it's fun, it gets a bit dicey to pull off. The other genre I absolutely enjoy is essays, dealing with non-fiction. Essays dealing with historical trivia, philosophical, political, science, and one of my all time favorites, mathematics. Isaac Asimov's essay The Imaginary That Isn't is my absolute favorite. Second best would be his essay debunking the infamous pseudo-science of astrology. To which I cannot for the life of me right now remember the title.
Anything historical or cultural based true, stories or fiction. I do read some general fiction too but not the kind without an interesting plot, I love a 'hard to put down' book.
I haven't read many romances that I've liked. The few exceptions are books that aren't just romance but have other stories miixed in and are even more prominent than the romance.
I love reading horror genre novels. I love how they show that the greatest thing that human's have is also their weakest... The mind.
Personally it's a toss up between science fiction, humor, and political fiction. Basically, anything that makes me think or makes me laugh is something really worth reading. Catch-22 did both, and that makes it one of the best books I've read this year, second only to 1984.
That'd be Horror, the thrilling and suspense for some is almost unbearable. With a great follow up being Fantasy.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. It combines the fascination of history for me as well as some pretty amazing characters.
If I had to pick JUST one ... oh the agony! ... then it would be Fantasy. But oddly, I don't write fantasy. Huh! Go figure! Sci-fi, horror, crime/suspense are the runners up!
I think I just like all except for Western and Romance. I'm not a fan of love stories. Sprinkles of it in other genres are fine, but only romance...I can't stomach that.
I actually voted for Fantasy a while back on this thread. But after steeping myself in Science Fiction these past few weeks, I've changed my mind...Sci-Fi is now my new favorite genre.
I'd throw Sci-Fi as my favorite in there as well, but that's why I included the futuristic fantasy addendum.
Science Fiction, I wouldn't hesitate one second. It is mind blowing to share someone's fears about a hypothetical future. Still I think I could have picked a different genre if I had been in a different mood today. hehe
