Whenever I have the spare time to do whatever I want, I often write. My boredom is what compels me to write.

The reason why I write is test my creativity to see if I can come up with original ideas to a story.

You know those log lines you see on TV guides? If a screenwriter can come up with something, then I can. Therefore, the log line for different genres, is what makes me write. However, I write different subjects of different genres. So I don't have specific details about what I actually write.

My teacher advised her students to write a story, who made me decide to write. I stopped writing until an idea (an idea that is no longer compelling) came into my mind. When that idea went astray, I started coming up with more ideas about a story. Thus, my own instance at this moment is what makes me write what I write.

Though I don't have a specific genre on what I write, I am in the process of writing comedy for an audience who watches comedy.

I have posted many times in this thread, a few times. But as my life progresses, my reasons for writing changes.

I have grown to love my characters, they have taken on a life of their own. I'm on my fifth book now with no end in sight.

    1. I suppose my hyper nature? I love to create elaborate random stories on the spot out of what ever i can pull together from the pit of my imagination.

    2. I write because I just do. I really can't help it. If i don't have a notebook with me when I go out, i feel lousy and twitchy. I simply HAVE to know that I can write something down for me to scribble on about later.

    3. My hyperness makes me write what I write, plain and simple

    4. Writing my once very vivid and beautiful dreams come to life, and it was something to distract me from the droll life of a 4th grader.

    5. I love fantasy stories, from really serious ones to really funny ones. I also love old fashioned stories, stories set back in time or in a 'punk'. I would love to experience them, so I put myself in the back ground world of the characters.

I write because I love the sounds of computer keys being rapidly pressed and the scratching sounds pens and pencils make on paper.
I love stringing together words and filling up pages with whatever I can and, knowing it is all mine. I like the smudges on lined paper and the neatness of a computer screen.
I like the dialogue my characters make in my head during long car rides and knowing every inch of someone.
I enjoy the idea of seeing a fanfiction based on one of my own works and the look my name or pen name would look on a front cover.
I love showing people what my mind can create and hearing every detail I can fix to make my story that much better.
I like to write because it entertains me.

This is a serious question in fact. I write for self gratification, to try to discover something, my nature and my relationship with the universe I am in, and to leave a mark or footprint in the sands of time, out of the ego to say something or to be somebody or to reserve space and earn money or to put forth certain ideas I cannot convincingly say in the mass.

There are multiple reasons as to why I do write. It is an impulse, an urge that pops up inside me. Everyone has an impulse and that seeks an expression and that is why I love writing

I felt compelled to write when my baby sister decided that women do not make good writters. But I have always wanted to write. I feel I have something interesting to say, if only I can find the right words...

I write to leave the world with a thought/message, each of my works is dif, thus the reason changes. Sometimes it is due to a social injustice that I wish to right, at other times it is political satire putting voice to issues that I think are relavent. At other times it is just to free myself from becomming a drone.

Think that covers all the q's.

As stated above, dark fantasy. Also horror sometimes, or both, and edging into poems.

    What compells you to write?
After reading a good book and having my wild, yet limited, imagination run through my head, it makes me want to sit down and start filling up the blank notebook paper in front of me with a good story.

    Why do you write?
I don't write just for others pleasure, but for my own. I never tell anyone what I really like and never express my real emotions to other. So I decided to put them on a paper.

What makes you write what you write?
I love to write horror/action/fantasy type of stories. For the fantasy genre, I usually go into deep into my imagination and get lost within the settings for the story. Having the impossible things happen as possible through writing is what I always loved. For the horror genre, I really like to put people's emotions to the test, seeing how far they're willing to go in order to face the ordeal.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I really don't know, to be quite frank. I've actually been writing stories for a long time in my childhood years. Probably just to express my emotions and love for stories?

    What Do You Write?
I usually write, like I answered in the other question, horror/action/fantasy type of genre. :-D

I have a number of reasons for writing:

I enjoy the craft of it. By craft I'm talking building something out of words, I like to build things.

I have things to say that I can't get out in conversation.

    I want to be self-employed.

    I think I'm clever.

I have a business idea that will only work if I have a novel written and at least one in the works.

    1. It's much quieter in my head when I put all those people down on paper instead of having them telling their stories up there.

    2. Because I love the English language. Not so much for the strange melting-pot conconction that is so politely called "English Grammar", but for it's near infinite capability for nuance, subtlty and connotation.

    3. What I've read combined with what I've experienced.

    4. I tried it.

    5. Sci-fi, fantasy, and general fiction.

    What compels you to write?
Driving, smoking and watching the sky. I always end up with a good idea or two after a solitary, meditative drive. Also, many of the events in my life have provided me with endless material that I want to record.

    Why do you write?
I love getting lost in my imagination. I can spend hours daydreaming and thinking of various scenarios. However, it isn't very fun to just sit around thinking all day every day, so writing allows me to put my pretend worlds down on paper. It also gives me the opportunity to expand on those worlds and maybe someday bring them to an audience that might appreciate them.

What makes you write what you write?
My idealistic nature makes me want to write about perfect, dreamy worlds. On the other hand, I have a pretty gruesome evil side that I love to let out on paper. Also, I get a lot of material from my daily life. Sometimes I distort circumstances to add some extra drama but sometimes I leave things just as they are. The weird things that happen sometimes just scream "WRITE ME DOWN!"

What made you decide you liked to write?
I've been writing since I knew how to form letters. I never really decided one day that I liked to write. It just always was.

    What do you write?
I like to write fantasy and mystery stories. Dysfunctional families and my dreams pop up a lot in my writing as well.

For me its a chance to let my voice be heard. Even if one person reads it.. it might be enough to influence an individual. I find that its a sort of meditation and inner analysis

    1. My thoughts and dreams seem to draw me to write them down and from there is where I get my story ideas from.
    2. I write to escape the world around me, but also to deal/get through things that I go through in my life.
    3. Amazing ideas that I can tie into my current piece(s) gets me excited and ready to just sit down and write.
    4. Back in fourth grade we had journals that we had to write in and I just started to write stories in them. Once a week we would share what we wrote, and I got a lot of positive feedback from it. Since then I'm rarely not thinking about ideas for what I'm working on.
    5. I write what's on my mind. Usually it's fiction with elements of my real life within it.

I'm an introvert by nature, although I'm a lot more talkative than I used to be. I'm also a deep thinker, pondering over an idea long after others have typically moved on. In conversations about weighty matters, I often listen to other people's views for many minutes before feeling that I have something to contribute. Some people ask why I can't just spit something out--the answer is that I'm still gestating! Give me a few minutes and I usually come up with something profound. Trouble is, often times the conversation is over and I'm left with a great comment that goes unheard. That's one of the reasons I like to write; it gives me a chance to air out my thoughts where and when I feel I have something to say, rather than being put on the spot.

Writing also gives me a chance to makes sense of the world--to sort out the thoughts that bounce around in my head. And of course, it's fun to imagine and create. :)

I'm growing very attached to my novel, more so the farther I get on it. I care about the story. I want to push it out there -- finishing it, revising it until I'm content it's the absolute best I can do, getting a good publisher, promoting it etc.

    What compels you to write?
Inspiring images, dramatic scenarios. I also love to write, for the purpose of making fantasy into reality.

    Why do you write?
I love the art of stringing words together to create meaning. I love drawing out single moments in time. Fleshing out simple things to show just how complex something simple might be.

What made you decide you liked to write?
I never thought I could write well. The person I love told me a few years ago that I have a natural talent for writing, thus I began pursuing to enhance that aptitude.

I've commented on this thread at least three times already, with each time posing a new and different understanding of WHY I write. Now I have another reason.

I write because it'd drive me crazy if I didn't. I get ideas, read books I really love, and just want to write something really, really, really good too. Ya know?

I guess I write to keep myself sane, while really in reality I just drive myself INSANE at the same time.

^True story. My current WIP could bear a very good witness. It's a pain in the butt, but I want it just to turn out well.

    Why Write?
    What compels me to write?
    Everything compels me to write
Everything gives me sparks of inspiration
That's the only way to explain it

    Why do I write?
For the freedom I never really had
The way the words fall on the page
    it makes me feel alive.

What makes you write what you write?
    If I don't I'll go crazy
With every little idea popping up in my head
Every second of free time I try to write

What made you decide you like writing?
    Well that's a silly question
As soon as I could speak I would tell stories
As soon as I could write I would write stories

    What do you write?
    Everything and everywhere
    Fantasy to realistic
I never want to leave a story untold

I read these posts about why people write and it made me wonder what do people do with their writing? Were does it go? Does a friend read it and respond? How much of it is published? What happens to the stuff the people who post here actually write?

Does it just stack up in some file somewhere to be cleaned out by your kids when you (or I, for that matter) croak? What do we do with this stuff?

For me, I don't really do much with it. I send it to a few people I trust enough to have them either laugh with (or at) me and not feel bad about it. Other than that it will be deleted by my daughter, if it lasts that long.

What do people actually do with this stuff?

It seems like the write-or-die mentality abounds. I don't get that feeling at all. Writing is just so much work. I'd rather get drunk.
