I'm nearly 50 and my ideal job would be developing websites. I just really enjoy it and I do it for fun for a non-profit group that runs a science fiction conference/convention every year in Houston called ApollloCon.

Right now I'm in college to learn the skills needed to do it as a pro.

I'm 53 and in my alternate universe I am a successful fiction writer who moonlights as a rock star. In this one I would be a successful fiction writer. And somewhere in my 30's. ;)

sounds rather intense. the idea spooks me out a bit. It reminds of the Pharoah so advanced they were but nothing left them now.

21, and I think my ideal thing (not considering it a job) to do is dancing (breakdance). I'm already giving dancing classes in my country and participated in some dancing battles and showcases. Doing something that keeps you excited in your life is the right thing for you. And earning money from something you love to do is rewarding, not just routine.

I'm 27, and I think I'd like to be a stay-at-home-dad... maybe. Honestly, I can't decide what I want to do when I grow up. That's why I play in fantasy worlds. Can't I just be something different every week, and get paid for it? Sheesh.

Howdy, you can choose to do anything in this world, even that a-stay-home-dad, but the important question is this: Are you happy/ok with it yourself? If yes, it's your choice, but if no, you have to get out and do something. Also I don't understand what do you mean by, "I can't decide what I want to do when I grow up", Was it supposed to be, 'I couldn't decide....'? Cuz if you mean, "I can't decide...", I believe you are more than a grown up now :)

Search in deep inside yourself on what you can do and love to do, the something you meant to do.

I'm 19. I havent determined any specific career but I'm going to apply for school of economics this spring (though I'll start my studies at the earliest in 2013 autum). I would also like if I could publish novel or novels at some point in the future.

Some interesting replies in this thread.

I'm not too old and my ideal job would be a novel writer - what else? Surprised more people haven't put writing, though I guess those ones do it more as a hobby?

Rock stars are like shooting stars but a good novel can reign for decades.

I just turned 20. My ideal job would be to do something to conserve the everglades. I would love to be in a wader collecting samples, in the lab analyzing, working with animals (rescuing and relocating), and working on plant conservation and protecting the watershed! yay. But I think I would get frustrated with the structure and regularity of the job, so in the real world, I'd like to take over my father's landscaping company. I'm also pretty creative so I enjoy designing.

I want a job that grants my life meaning. I'm tired of slaving away at $8.00 an hour in a dead end job that I despise. I want a job where I can wake up in the morning and go "yes, that. I want to do that." For right now writing is striking that fancy, though I know I can't make money off of it.

actually, there is... it's called 'money'!... those are costly hobbies to gear up for and pursue... and since i'm homeless and possessionless [but for my laptop], too far out of my reach to even think about... besides, i don't do hobbies and would only want to practice them full time, as a profession/'job'... which is what the op's question addressed...
