I'm not able to watch coverage of the US and Australian Open so no idea how this final compares to other finals Murray has been in. Murray tried his best but sadly Federer was just too good. Awesome match nonetheless.
Congratulations to Warrington on making it to the Challenge Cup final! They'll have my support as they're playing a team from Leeds.
Pre-season is here! And with it comes a defeat for our expensively-assembled side in the first friendly against non-League Guiseley. Sounds about right...
OLYMPICS. I wish I could watch every event. So far, watched a bit of swimming, rowing, cycling and gymnastics. Britain seem to be doing well as far as I'm aware. I thought the Olympic opening ceremony was really good. It was nice how they showed the history with the industrial revolution, remembrance, suffragettes etc. (although non-British people may not understand it) and I especially liked the children's literature/NHS bit.
Well, I guess we now know that as far as Olympic tennis is concerned, it is not a Major But seriously, congrats to Andy Murray. Hopefully between this and Wimbledon he'll finally earn some love at home. Now hopefully he decides to put in an appearance at the Rogers Cup next week, because the field is already looking thin.
Christina Pederson should never be allowed in a soccer stadium the rest of her life, even if she pays. edit: calmed down a little bit. Still mad, and that was a joke of a display of officiating. I just feel bad for Sinclair. Canada had better crush France, and since they were given this opportunity US had better win gold to take some sting out of it. I just hope this gets Canadians talking about soccer in general and women's soccer, because it really was a great match. edit: So not only has FIFA decided not to do anything about the utterly incompetent Pederson, but now the Canadian team is being investigated for having the nerve to even dare to question her apparently infallible calls. The Canadian media is running away with this (this is by far the largest story of the Olympics here) and are speculating that Sinclair may be suspended for the Bronze medal game. There are already many Canadians demanding Sinclair carry the Canadian flag in the closing ceremonies, but should she be denied of her chance to even compete for a medal, I think the choice is obvious. I guess it makes sense though, yesterday a FIFA official robbed her of an Olympic medal, so why not let another FIFA official rob her of one today?
Baha. I'm so glad that Murray won gold. I was on Centre Court when he won against Djokovic in the semi-finals and I was like 'wow'. And then he goes on to win the gold medal! I think this is great for Murray (obviously) but hopefully it will give him confidence to finally win a grand slam and it shows that he really is threat. He definitely played some brilliant tennis. As for Olympics in general, Great Britain are doing amazing! Loving watching all these different sports and achievements. Not long left of the Olympics now though.
It really does feel like he's going to break through soon. If not the US Open, maybe Australia or Wimbledon next year. Also nice to see Britain doing well- Canada's success at the Vancouver games brought a lot of energy and momentum as the Olympics went along, culminating in country-wide celebrations in the street after winning in hockey. Hopefully there will be something similar for London. Fortunately for all of the remaining teams, Pederson will not be involved in either of the medal matches for women's soccer. I guess it makes sense, there's no way FIFA would schedule her for the Canadian game, nor reward her performance with an appearance in the gold medal match. The Americans are probably every bit as relieved as the Canadians given some of the obvious fouls she missed. Funny thing about that match- had Canada won, the US may well have been complaining about the ref- and they'd have had a compelling argument of their own. Edit: Canadian media is reporting that Christine Sinclair will avoid suspension for the Bronze medal match. If so, it's reasonable and fair because while her comments weren't entirely appropriate, they came under extraordinary circumstances. No word yet on the coach John Herdman or any other member of the team. If anyone is to be suspended, it should probably be forward Melissa Tancredi, who for reasons known only to Pederson avoided a red card despite numerous flagrant fouls.
Well, my day out at the Olympics was pretty brilliant Got to see Mo Farah qualify for the men's 5000m, and some pretty brilliant pole vaulting
Jealous! Also, how well could you actually see? I'm not sure how much you can see, although I guess it depends where you're sitting.
I don't know if this belongs in this topic, but I have a question: Even though Judo is certified as a sport, do you think that other, more violent martial arts, like Karate and Muay Thai should also be considered sports?
So Canada won the bronze medal match in women's soccer today It's funny, they didn't play nearly as well as they did on Monday- and, unlike Monday, they really shouldn't have won. The French easily gave the superior effort, and the officials may have been a little generous on the winning goal. Still, this is a huge result for Canadian soccer- for an entire week this drama has been the biggest story in the country, and now it gets a happy ending. As for Sinclair, after years of quietly being one of the greatest athletes the country has ever produced (at least outside of hockey) she's finally receiving the attention she deserves. In addition to the campaigns to name her the flag bearer at the closing ceremonies, it seems most of the media has already decided she deserves the Lou Marsh Award for Canadian athlete of the year. Yes, that includes all athletes, of all genders, in all sports. Even hockey.
Peyton Manning throws a pick in a preseason game. Let the discussion of the Denver Broncos' decision to bring in the highly paid, not yet recovered QB; Jet-tisoning Tim Tebow and giving up on other options for that 20 M cap hit.
Absolutely gutting. We kicked off the Championship season at promotion favourites Cardiff City and lost by a jammy doubly-deflected goal in the ninety-second minute to nil after being the better team for much of the game. So proud to be a Huddersfield Town fan tonight, even if it is in a galling defeat.
Are any of you having Olympic withdrawls? I miss hearing announcers and pool shouting in the background. It was a great Olympic year. I sort of stopped watching after the gymnastics and swimming were done. Volleyball was fun to watch too, I found it humorous US went against US in the finals. I can't believe I'll be 22 next Summer Olympics....wonder what that will be like.
Because he's a footballing dinosaur who, when push came to shove, would have sent Liverpool backwards. He spent extortionate amounts on average players, supported Suarez when he shouldn't have, and was a very average manager last season.
He got us a trophy. I dunno, I'm just not feeling Brendan Rogers. I've been apprehensive about him all summer, and today's disaster against West Brom didn't really reassure me.
I think I'd get a team a trophy if I was given £70m to spend over the course of a season and a bit. The performance in the Premier League was sub-standard for Liverpool, the team had no cutting edge, and Dalglish didn't hold an answer. Brendan Rodgers is a manager who may take a bit of time to impose himself on the team, but he'll get the team playing well, scoring goals and defending from the front. He happened to be fortunate at Swansea to succeed Martinez, another shrewd modern manager, so could bring his own style in without having the play about behind the scenes so much.
