Wondering if anyone has had experience with this. My editor requested a 1099-MISC for her work on my recent self-pub book, which is fine, but I'm wondering what the best way to go about this is? I can download the blank form and fill it out. Will that suffice? Or is there something else I need to do? I called the folks who do my taxes and they were no help (I got the "let me talk to the manager and I'll get back to you" treatment ). I figured some people here might have had to do this before and wondering how you handled it? Just want to make sure I do this part correctly. Thanks!
I mean 1099s are used by independent contractors to report income, so I could see how your editor would need one for their own taxes because you're paying them but not as their employer. Can't see how that would apply to you, though.
Well, I need to report the expense because it's above a certain amount. Conversely, she needs to report the income. My question is, if I just download the form, fill it out, give a copy to her and keep a copy for myself, is that good enough come tax time?
I'm british so i don't know the fine detail but i'd suggest you also get her to give you a receipt detailing the service provided and the amount paid
Yes I already have those as well as invoices. I just need to know exactly how to procure and deliver the 1099.
