    TV Lingo

Discussion in 'Research' started by Bakkerbaard, Aug 28, 2021.

Do we have any people here with experience in American or English television?
I work in Dutch TV, but the lingo is obviously different and Google Translate doesn't do well with contextual translations. Add to that the fact I don't want to spend too many words on explaining what a thing does and you start getting stuck pretty quickly.

I've got a few right out of the gate.
    - What do you call the people who research a topic for a talkshow so the host looks good when they go live? According to Google, this is the editorial staff, but it doesn't sound right to me.

    - The guy with the buttons. Video mixer? Like, when the director goes: "Cue two... Two!" and the guy presses camera two on a table made out of buttons.
I checked with the 'videomixer' here, but he isn't sure either, which is probably because we already call the table he uses a videomixer.

I'd call the first 'fact checkers', and the second a 'producer' or 'board op'.

I don't know anything about TV, but in the music industry, the person who runs the giant console full of sliders and buttons is called an audio engineer. Maybe the TV equivalent is a video engineer? Google shows some promising results for the term, though I didn’t go reading them all.
