    Hi to all

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Skyscraper83, Nov 9, 2007.

I normally do not enjoy introductions but I will give this one a shot. Since childhood, I have always enjoyed writing but my grammar skills in some areas are lacking. I found this discouraging, and for a while I stay away from writing. You cannot build a house if you do not know how to lay all the bricks, was the way I saw it. Anyway, in my spare evenings I have been reading over some helpful English resources on the net. It is still a work in progress as you can likely see from the errors I am making now in this post (even when I am cheating by preparing this text in Microsoft Office). I hope to continue to work and improve on my skills so I can fully enjoy writing fiction. Feel free to unleash the full wrath of the forums grammar police if I step out of line. I will find this helpful.

On the note of fiction, I remember finding a lot of enjoyment in stories like The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann, and the series of books released by Elyne Mitchell. I enjoy these stories greatly as a child and still enjoy writing within this genre as an adult today. Unlikely as it may feel, I hope to publish something for the early teen audience someday in this genre.

Well I have been rambling on long enough, so I think I stop and just say “Hi to all” and “Thank you for having me.”

Welcome to the site, Skyscraper. No matter how you put yourself, we're thrilled to have a new person amongst us.

Here's a basic welcome from all of us. It should be obvious, but in case it isn't, let me explain. The Writing Problems Area is exclusively where opinions on different ways to write, blockages in writing styles and similar problems can be discussed. In the Review Room, you can get critical appreciation and/or analysis of your written material. Behold, you must first review two pieces of writing before posting your own. This is ensure the pieces are evaluated to the most. Other than this, we have Writing Cotnests, weekly and monthly, where you can submit your writing. We also have Word games, Book Discussion and so on, classified under Community interaction. It may interest you if you're just hanging around.

adamant has been kind enough to put many of the things I have mentioned or missed out on in one comprehensive place. If you want to check it out, see the Newbie Packets:
    Noobie Packets! - Writing Forums

Enjoy it here, and don't feel shy to ask for help. We are all here to teach and learn in a mutual environment. And we hope you can do the same.

    Regards and Best Wishes!

Hello Skyscraper, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

By your user name, I am am guessing that you may be taller than average.

It sounds as though you are taking a very methodical approach to improving your grammar skills. As you say, SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) are the bricks and mortar of writing, and I think there are few, if any, writers who cannot improve their skill in this area. I believe the best approach is to take a small number of specific rules at a a time that you have trouble with and focus on them until you feel comfortable with them. As for "cheating" with Word or other tools, I wish more people would do so. The fact is, even with such a tool, you still need to use your own judgment to decide which suggestions to accept and which to ignore; Word is not infallible, and there are also times when you will choose to bend or break the rules.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well!

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room on this site, therefore, is a true workshop, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Thank you for warm the welcome and a special thank you to Cogito for the time she has already spent with me in the spelling and grammar forum. I still have a few questions, but I did not want to inundate you at all at once. I am still a little unsure in deciding between introductory or preposition phases, but I like to make an effort to find the answer myself. The nickname Skyscraper is a nickname I usually go by when playing FPS. I am sorry to disappoint but I am of quite regular height. Anyway, I have been slowly poking my head around the boards and once I finish here I certainly going to read the nooby package.

Bluemouth mate, thank you for offer (South Aussie here). I am working on some text currently and it is nearing completion. I think it would be beneficial if someone can point out my weakest errors in my grammar, so I could focus my study a little more. Perhaps someone may be able to do this from the text I have already done here and within the spelling & grammar board.

Once again, I offer a big thank you for the warm welcome.

I am sure that you as a new member will bring something unique and valuable to the forum, as well as find it an interesting and wonderful place to explore and learn more about the wonderful world of writing.

I have been away for awhile myself, and unfortunately have not been able to keep up with greeting the large influx of new members personally. Please forgive; except my sincerest and belated welcome to the forum.

    Cordially yours,

PS: Sorry about the canned welcome, but there are just so many new members that it would be an awesome task to send persona greetings to everyone.
