I Cannot Come Up With Anything Other Than "Hello".

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Ventriloquist, Jan 14, 2009.

    Rather lame, isn't that?

Anyhow, I'm new to your site, I actually came here trying to figure out something about Microsoft Word, (I thought a site dedicated to story writing or such would have such information), but anyway.

I'm a literary enthusiast, 15 years of age and living in Victoria, Australia. My works have been small so far, but I get many original story ideas from my muse, who is a friend, we both are good speakers and writers and have many random conversations, which often provoke a story to form in my head based on what is said. Quite weird, I know, but I also get story ideas from other things to if that helps :p

Anyway, I love to write, draw, write songs and create poems. I just love to write, as a form of expression.

Anyway, though I haven't found anything to help me with something I need to know for writing a new story in Microsoft Word, I have decided to stick around here because the site looks pretty interesting and friendly.

My name is James by the way, and it's a pleasure to meet everyone who will (hopefully) greet me now :p

    Howdy

These introductory posts are rather awkward aren't they? =D

Hello James. Nice to meet ya. I'm new too. You write songs eh? Somehow I always have a problem with that. I either create a tune but can't find words to fit it or write a song and can't find a tune to fit it :p It's pretty frustrating really.

Write songs, novels (though unpublished atm :p) and poems and lots of things :D

But as for writing songs, I think finding something that was a personal experience, or something you feel strongly about, and writing words from the heart. It's quite similar to a poem, but there are some verses, repeats, chorus mainly stays the same but you can switch it up a little bit. I'll post one of my songs here one day :p

A tune really doesn't matter all that much. If a person was to actually sing it, a tune can be created by prolonging sentences and notes, etc. You create the melody in your head and imagine a singer singing it like that and almost anything becomes singable.

Anyway ty for the welcome, I was about to welcome you too at the same time you welcomed me :p

Hello James, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

So tell me - did my lips move at all?

    Well thankyou and kyle :D

And thanks Cogito for the extra advice, but I've already reviewed two pieces of work and understand the forum rules etc :D But still, I appreciate the gesture ^^.

Well, to be honest, you squeaked by on the reviewing requirement. Take another look at my comments after your first review.

It's not as obvious or straightforward as you might think. The Review Room workshop really is NOT the best place to go to first.
