And crashing in for a landing...!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by PinVvvV, Feb 27, 2025.

Greetings earthfellows! My online handle is Pin, so that's what all y'all can feel free to call me.

I couldn't help but join when I saw all the little tasties around here. A contest here, a short story over there, sprinkle on some poetry and a dash of RP and ya got me. Hook, line, and sinker!

I mostly write sci-fi and fantasy, and probably the less popular genre of animal fiction too, but I swear I've gotten better at writing humanoids. Beastly things have always captivated me and I am a nature/animal enthusiast, something that shines through in my writing at times.

Did you know a wolf's howl does not echo?

I'd say I write mainly for young adult/adult audiences, seeing as I include moderate gore, violence, and erotic scenes. I am fairly detailed when I need to be, I have been writing stories and improving on my multiverse series since I was 15. A lot of my ideas have matured with age, but my passion for character creation/development, world building, and plot twists remain the same.

Another tidbit about me is that I have ADHD and while chatting OOC I can bounce all over the place. I'm good at staying on track with my fiction writing though. I'm only a spaz when I'm not brain deep inside of a character.

Anyway, I lool forward to becoming an active member here and getting to know a lot of you. I'm a pretty chill guy, so feel free to ask me things if you're curious.

Hello, Pin. Thanks for introducing yourself!

I did not know that! (Or maybe I just forgot) However, it does make sense, given the survival advantage. That is one pretty cool fact.
It's as if they're the polar opposite of dolphins, who need their songs to echo through the water. It's incredible how the way sound travels through different mediums has shaped the evolution of both these creatures in their own unique way. Thanks for sharing!

I hate to be the spoilsport, but I should point out, a wolf's howl, like a duck's quack (which some people say doesn't echo either), is just a soundwave like any other, and like any other movement of air particles, bounces off solid objects - in other words, it does echo.

Yes, that is true! Besides, it would be next to impossible for an animal to get to a point where it can make a sound that is 100% non-reverberating, even under selective pressures.
Though, from what I can gather, a wolf's howl is generally about the closest an animal can get to as little of an echo as possible. Or at least, as close as one has gotten as far as I know. So there is an echo, just not a big one compared to say, our noises.

It does echo, it doesn't echo. I swear no one can make up their minds, even the Google search was a mixed bag. Guess scientists have changed their minds about that again because back when I was doing wolf RPs, I got my ass chewed for having a howl echo and they linked science articles and everything that supported their answer. Granted, that was....uh...a very long time ago. There was even a documentary I saw that supported the "does not echo" theory at some point.

I do know that their howl does tend to be absorbed more than it bounces? But it can bounce if that last article was anything to go by.

LOL! Yeah that's unfortunate, hahaha. Still a cool fact, though.
