    AI Generated Art

    Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Madman, Dec 5, 2021.

    My brother recommended me this AI art generator today. It's pretty cool, just feed it a prompt and select a style then create.

    Never seen anything like this. It's pretty good as well.

    What do you think about AI capabilities? Will we writers and artists go extinct faster than we think? What images did you make?

    Looks like something you would see in an original Star Trek episode.

    I tend to dislike the sin but love the sinner.

    When the AIs attempt the music they just seem able to 'produce it', I've never listened to anything worth my time on that department.
    We'll keep writing for the fun of it, same as people keep knitting, cooking and singing.

    The question is if (well, probably when) the companies behind mass media will prefer to pay or not pay for human artists, and how the public will react.
    The public probably won't know at that stage, or the companies will chose to simply lie about it.

    On certain circles, coding is the modern equivalent of reading and writing back in the 18th Century. The skill of programming is already considered art by programmers themselves (also known as 'developers'). Videogames are referred as 'the Opera of programming'. I can see the AI coders earning higher salaries than human artists when taking a job at mass media companies, though they'll have to accept being anonymous, which they already are and (most of them) prefer anyway.

    It will get certainly harder for humans to be 'recruited' by big media. What will save independent artists is the support of fans (think of Patreon), which in turn favours the arts since they don't have to adapt their art to any sort of political agendas or censorship.

    So... the more, the merrier I guess... AI can influence human art as well.

    My friend recently introduced me to artbreeder, and as someone with no artistic ability whatsoever, I used it to make faces for my characters. The hair gets a little weird sometimes, but it's really quite good.

    Example:

    Interesting points, @Vaughan Quincey
    AI sure can influence us as well, the tool I used above for example has influenced me a bit now.

    @izzybot cool!

    I've seen AI-generated art before, and tried one program or other. Never really investigated it, but it's pretty cool. As a writer and an artist I have mixed feelings about the whole idea, never mind the whole Apocalypse by Thinking Engine scenario. I don't have super high aspirations about making it professionally as an artist, so I don't care that much for myself, but I wouldn't want my artist friends and acquaintances (or strangers) to be out of a job, of course. I think there will always be a market for manmade art, but I don't know how commercially competative it can remain if this thing keeps escalating. It will be interesting to see what directions art moves in if and when AI fully steps in to compete. I think AI writing is another beast entirely, and that the particular human touch can't be entirely manufactured. At least not quite yet.

    Anyways, I was impressed with the performance of this generator. It makes me feel all kinds of obsolete, but then again it's awesome. Thanks a bunch for sharing this! I'm sure I'll use it tons, as inspiration if nothing else.

    @Night Herald
    It's going to be interesting to see how AI develops. I'm hoping it will be a tool for human artists to fulfil their worlds. But yeah, in the end it will probably have its own life.

    Cool images!
