    No avatar? How come?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Wreybies, Feb 18, 2014.

Just curiosity on my part. I'm a visual kind of guy. I like to see a picture. Clearly not everyone is this way, and thank goodness for our variety in view. :) But I am curious as to what leads members, especially long-standing members in this or any other online community, to chose no avatar for their member badge.

I had a police-type mugshot of myself as my avatar recently. It was too depressing to look at so I took it down!

I like to be able to visualise members who post on here. Some people may be shy...If they have no avatar I'll just fill in the blanks :)

Maybe some of us are just lazy. I didn't have an avatar for a long time, and it was mostly because I didn't want to post a pic of myself and I didn't want to spend hours going through images available online until I found something that fits.

I guess this means me. :p

The absence of an avatar is just as much a form of identity and expression as an avatar. Yeah, I'm postmodern like that.

I have an avatar but long ago when I didn't it was because I didn't know how to create one. On this forum it's a lot easier but I can see people not knowing that.

I happen to love squirrels. I don't have much of an affection for hats, but you have to admit, the little guy in my avatar rocks it! ;)

For me it is both laziness and that I have no idea what to pick.
I've considered random image-googling just to get something up there but haven't really got around to it. Sometimes it bothers me, because I want to have a picture that somehow represents me, at other times I simply don't care. (So maybe I should settle for an avatar that is one half the default, one half something else?)

Definitely. Every time I see a poster without an avatar I think "oh, a post by thirdwind!". :p

Maybe's it's too symbolic. One picture of a random item to sum someone up. That's hard.
I just picked something I love - old vintage make up ads. I like the colors and the girls are cute.

I always get confused though, when an avatar gets changed - I'm like hey whose the new guy/gal and then I'm like oh, okay it's you and you've got a facechange- lol.

I tend to change mine. I've tried to stay to at least a theme lately, though. This latest Ganesh is my favorite because he's actually pretty hot, you know... for a dude... with a pachyderm head. ;)

You've had that one for a while though @Wreybies!

I'm considering changing mine to this beautiful piece of fanart I found.

Lol! I stick to a theme too, either something from Clannad or Ouran Host Club, as homage to both parts of my user name. My new avatar is a fanart of Haruhi and Tamaki from Ouran Host Club. I might branch out though, I have some ideas.

I learned about Ganesh from when I was babysitting. :)

This is the account I use when I need to look at the forum from a regular member's POV. Sometimes issues that pop up in the forum are invisible or don't present the same to mods. I think this is the first time I have ever posted with it. I don't want to give the impression that duplicate accounts are OK. They are not. This account exists only for the aforementioned reasons. Anyway.... The image is Govinda (same as the screen name). Govinda is one of the nicknames for both Vishnu and also Krishna (who is an incarnation of Vishnu). It means, among other things, Protector of Cows. Before attaining godhood Lord Vishnu was a human cow-herder.

This is very interesting. I know very little about this, but aren't Vishnu and Krishna a couple?

Nope. Krishna is the 8th incarnation of Vishnu, thus they are one in the same, and also separate. Lord Vishnu has had many incarnations. As Krishna, his wife is Radhe (also Radha or Radhika, Radharani and Radhikarani, depends in where in India you are).
