I'm looking for some recommendation for some sites where people can share original works, especially ones where the readers offer reactions and maybe feedback. For example, if I were sharing fanfiction, I know of several sites that are good places to share fanfiction. Archive of Our Own has fans of all kinds of different works. Spacebattles is a forum I frequent where people share all sorts of nerdy fanfiction, although there seem to be particular shows/movies that are more popular. But what about places for sharing original fiction? What are some sites where people go to read/share original stories?
Wattpad works pretty well for original works, but the prevalent genres on there are romance [the kind barely appropriate for the intended age demographic] and fantasy There are little pockets of the community for more niche genres like science fiction, thrillers and whatnot, though, but your story is unlikely to gain significant traction unless it has romance of some form as a marketable factor
I did some googling. Came up with FictionPress, which encompasses most genres. Room for feedback via reviews if you snag readers. Have fun. Edit: there's also Royal Road, but it apparently rejects L+ material and is selective w/regards to SPAG. Scribble Hub has a lot of manga-looking book covers, so I don't know if it matches what you're planning to publish, but it's another option.
Is it? The only thing I thought people shared for reading what in the critique section, which rules regarding people critiquing more than sharing. I'm talking about people just sharing stuff to be read. People giving feedback and responses is secondary. When I was writing a fanfiction I shared it on Spacebattles and a lot of people gave my chapters "likes" and I got some various comments. I also shared it on AO3 and I still get occasional "kudos" from time to time. I'm thinking it would be nice to share pieces of original fiction in the same manner; not a place where people come to write but a place where people come to read. But you just pulled those from a search? I was looking for recommendations; sites people could vouch for the kind of community, mention their experiences there, etc. EDIT: I suppose I should also state that I'm looking for "free" sites; I'm not looking to "publish" a story to sell. The kind of site I'm looking for shouldn't be having people trying to compete with serious works, I'm looking for a community where people just have fun sharing stuff they've written.
What about the new Writer's Showcase area here? The Writer's Showcase Post the work you just want to show off here. Note that although it's hidden from non members we cannot guarantee it won't be considered publishing in terms of first rights
Only thing is if Marscaleb wants to post a full novel, either in one helping or chapter-by-chapter, WF just isn't the place for it. https://www.writingforums.org/threads/read-this-first.175296/ I didn't realise OP was looking for a smaller community, either. My initial assumption was wanting as much exposure as possible. I don't have any personal experience with doing that. Have you checked out various subreddits? They're sort of like various niche collectives. Still, I suspect at least FictionPress is worth a look: it's quite casual, organised, and easy on the eyes, just not bustling with traffic. Edit: also there's not much to lose if you put some content on there to feel it out, since it's just for fun anyway.
Is it? The only thing I thought people shared for reading what in the critique section, which rules regarding people critiquing more than sharing. I'm talking about people just sharing stuff to be read. People giving feedback and responses is secondary. (Sorry, I've never figured out the multi-quote thing.) Just speaking for myself, but I read a lot of stuff posted in the Workshop that I don't critique, so if it's just eyeballs you're after, WF is at least one option.
Yes - take heart, OP - have you seen your page views in the forum index? Blood and Amber - 119 views since May Wandermage - Tamara's introduction - 124 views since April Anna's Magic (Selection) - 93 views since October Anna's Magic - 64 views since July WF is by no means a scientific or representative sample for audience feedback. It's probably at the extreme of having a small number of readers but very intense engagement - e.g. with over 10% of your readers on that last one caring enough to post a critique. Because of that, I'd suggest to try and see if a story picks up some likes here before posting it to the wider internet. But fan-fiction does have the advantage that the readers arrive already enthusiastic for the storyworld and characters. And Spacebattles does have a section for original work: https://forums.spacebattles.com/forums/original-fiction.48/ Some of the posts on that thread have millions of views. And there doesn't seem to be any length limit. So how isn't the problem already solved?
I honestly forgot that was there; half the time I'm not logged in when I first pop in on this site. Even so, this site is primarily dedicated to writing; I was asking about sites dedicated more toward reading. Naturally both will be found in both such sites, but there still is a difference in the vibe. I don't know if I'd say "smaller," but I was thinking more "casual." That said, It's probably fair to mentioned the "serious" places too, as others might dig up this thread asking a similar question. Yes there is, but it comparatively doesn't get much traffic because it isn't the focus of the site. And this really isn't a matter of "problem solved" or not; this is "looking for options." Even if I find one great site for this, what's wrong with finding another one too?
I honestly thought there would be more suggestions. Well, these ones that were mentioned look pretty good; I have found a couple sites I am going to try out. So thank you for those suggestions.
