How did your writing go today? What did you achieve? It doesn't have to be the number of words you wrote, it can be anything relating to writing - words, editing, getting something published etc. I managed 1100 words of my entry for next month's competition entry. First thing I've written in a few days. Very happy with how it's turning out, I reckon I'm capturing my chosen author's style pretty well.
It's been a while since I reviewed a story and doing one was fun. Not a great feat I have to add but it is nice to get back into the routine of reading others work. A huge positive is that the mind has been churning out new scenes and stories of late. A lot I have ignored though some I have typed into draft emails that I added to a new story. Looking to free up more time to write (especially my desire to work through feedback on stories I've received) but finding my writing routine is fun.
Strictly speaking, it was today since it happened after midnight, but I finished next month's comp entry today! 2200 words written in that session in about 4 hours. Took several breaks to review each section as I wrote it.
Got an idea for a story, got a couple of paragraphs into it. Don't know where it's going! But sometimes just getting started is the biggest hurdle.
A whispering or murmuring, often used to describe trees rustling and shit. I suppose a T-rex could qualify if it was super stealthy.
I've never actually seen the word in this form before, although I've seen "susurration". Although... isn't it "susurrus"/"susurrous"?
I would guess that susurrus (the sound) came first and was then followed by sussuration (the state of the sound occurring) in the etymological history. Probably when they started slapping "ation" at the end of any word that could take it, which is modern-ish, I believe.
Last night, I opened my manuscript, rewrote a scene, and deleted it. I also attempted 100-word-ish prose in Portuguese, and my brain was fried. Let's see what today brings.
I didn't write anything. But I killed a darling. Which was heartbreaking but I couldn't see any other way around it.
Tbh, Louanne, I find this 'search' for the story the most fun in writing. Not knowing where a story will go makes me let the mind wander to find meaning! Good luck with this! And do send anything this way for any views if you wish! Like what PiP wrote, it can be tough but often necessary to carry a greater message to the reader. A big positive (through my eyes anyway) is that it dug up such emotions that letting go is tough. This shows great character development which enriches a story.
Itching to write on my main book, but it's not with me right now. So, I am off to try and write on another story that I'm excited about. Been doing some writing related brainwork as I do every day. Think I hit some good ideas for book two in my main book series. Edit: And I did write several hundred words. Better than nothing.
I'm still obtaining my writing feat for today in the guise of formatting as I add the final edits to a manuscript I hope to release next Monday. I've done a lot of silent swearing (I was on the phone with a friend and he doesn't necessarily hate swearing, but I respect the peace), and I only got the giggly nearly tears once so far. Could I pay someone to do the formatting/editing for me? Sure. But then I'd have to relinquish control and that is "scary."
Drafted another chapter... I know this is just the skeleton phase, but I'm realizing with each chapter that I'm going to have to do a lot of editing. It somehow feels like things have both happened and not happened. Characters are being explored, hints to what certain things are or could be have been given, important milestone events for the book are being reached, and yet it feels like nothing is being accomplished. Guess all I can do is keep writing then, when I've got everything drafted, go back and make things less boring.
I got into a flash fiction but abandoned it because it was too much of a downer. But I got another idea and I am excited about it!
The word susurrus is forever linked to Aesop Rock for me haha "My last name, a thousand vowels fading down a sinkhole to a susurrus, couldn't just be John Doe or Bingo" I had the whacky idea of coaching middle school soccer this fall so I had very little time to write. Trying to get back into the swing of things... which means I opened a doc and wrote a couple of notes.
I tried to plot a new short story today. After an hour or so, I scrapped the whole thing because it turned out far too similar to an episode of Twilight Zone and had lost the point of the story I wanted to write in the first place.
Drafted another chapter. It feels like things are picking up again, even though I have somehow yet again avoided giving the character the thing she's been trying to find for several chapters now. Can't for the next three chapters, those are important character/other plot point chapters. After this arc, I have one more arc to give her the thing. If I somehow avoid it then I'm going to have to rewrite several chapters because clearly my brain does not want her to get the thing. On a less aggravating note, I have been editing some parts of the drafts. I'm mainly just trying to reduce my glue words and passive sentences.
I continued writing a story for a writing competition today. So far it's not coming out as well as I thought it would. Too much description and not enough story telling. I'll keep working on it, I still have a few more days before deadline.
