Hello all, hope you are doing fine in spite of what is still going on.

I joined back last year, partly because of the high quality content, partly also to test how good (or bad) my writing seems to other writers, see if you catch my flaws and plot holes. See if you can spot where I'm turning boring, since being your own judge all the time is... Delusional at best.

After writing like a maniac, taking advantage of Lockdowns and fear of many things, I stopped to focus on my own well being, in addition to the well being of those close to me.

Turns out I took an unexpected long vacation from both this forum and writing. The first didn't bothered me much, but the second came pretty much out of nowhere, since I rarely quit writing for so long.

Of course I kept taking notes from time to time, and revisiting my long novel (in addition of starting a short novel), but that doesn't feel much like writing, where you set your own deadlines and (broadly speaking) stick to them. It feels like vacations. At times it even feels as if last year shattered me more than I thought, because it impacted my writing in what I see as such a negative way.

Anyway, I'll make my best this time to take advantage of this amazing forum and give feedback on your work. My own work is, I'm afraid, still waking up from its long slumber.

I wonder if this happened to some of you. Suddenly what matters to you the most (or at least occupies a high place) seemed to vanish last year, buried under a million things that you'd have taken as mere distractions, if not plain and simple unhealthy, lazy indulgence.

Welcome back. I go into long slumbers from writing all the time, and then return once ideas have formed and I can't stay away any longer. That's starting to happen again now. It can be like a tide.

You're not alone in struggling to find time and motivations to keep on writing. The lock downs were like a coin, one side being the bad news of not being able to socialize and the other being the good news of being able to focus more on your writing.

And ditto on writing a novel. I've been at mine for several years. Reminds me of George Orwell's comment that... “Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.” Just after completing Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain described the difficulties of writing a novel... “And so there ain’t nothin’ more to write about and I am rotten glad of it ‘cause if I’d know’d what a trouble it is to make a book I wouldn’t a tackled it and ain’t never gonna do it again.”

Welcome back to WF, it is a good place to find ways to improve your writing and find friends who share the difficulties of writing.

Sounds like you´re addicted to writing. So you couldn´t forget about it, I guess. And I think that
many people in this forum can understand that.
And, regarding what happened to you, you can be sure that you´re not the only one.
So that you are coming back. It has happened to me many times. Go away for a while. Get busy with many other things. And then, come back.
Welcome to the forum. Welcome back.
