Hey everyone, long time no see. I’m corresponding from Nanchang (@Iain Aschendale I was in your neck of the woods, 17 hour layover in Tokyo, got to see some of the city) I have two side characters in Syria, both women, one a Sunni and one an Alawite. I think the story could be considerably stronger if I combined the two characters into one, I am trying to figure out when I merge, what characteristics remain and what must be discarded. My question revolves around working women and pregnancy, specifically for those religious groups, how late in pregnancy might a women work, and what occupations may be considered? Would nursing be an option? This is set during the civil war in Homs, so the normal order of society might be somewhat altered, I am not sure. If anyone can point me in the right direction or put me in touch with someone with reasonable knowledge of Syrian culture, that would be appreciated. I’ll be in Jinxian for the next week, so access to online resources is somewhat restricted.
I'm not Syrian so I can't really tell you anything about the culture, but I do know that many studies have shown that women can work throughout most of the pregnancy, like as long as it isn't a complicated pregnancy, if that makes sense.
With respect, one does not need a study to confirm that. One just needs to acknowledge the continued existence of the human race.
I lived in the Middle East for a number of years, although not in Syria. I don't recall seeing a pregnant woman in public, not even a foreigner.
