    Curiousity about forum communities

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Necronox, May 31, 2019.

So, I'm a member of more than one forum community. As a member I usually post when I want to but I don't necessarily post a lot. Either way I have noticed that this particular forum is actually a lot better in the community and it's members then some others. For instance there seems to be a lot less arguments, offensive or otherwise 'detrimental' forum behaviour.

Any guesses why? Maybe this site just attracts more calm natured people or more matured people?

    Usually that behavior gets,

so quickly that it doesn't have time to spread. So maybe that's it. The team works hard at keeping the peace.

But for fighting, the debate room exists. Usually.

I have been here less than a year. So I don't know much about history. Still... Here are my explanations:

    1. When I came here, this was incredibly much more political forum. SJW tendency was very strong. That has vanished. It means less deliberate misunderstanding. That means less fights and bad mood.

    2. Rules are clear and visible.

    3. Moderation line is reasonably constant.

    4. Ignore button is a wonderful thing. It helps keeping peace. You never loose anything if you ignore those who misunderstand you deliberately, stalk, seek for hierarchy battles...

    5. Like -button. You get positive feedback every now and then. It makes you feel good and maybe you want to get positive feedback.

    6. Black or bit twisted humour is allowed.

    7. In my opinion this is not competitive environment. It helps building and keeping better emotional atmosphere.

    8. I think this is more "I wanna do this" than "I wanna be Something" environment. I helps.

Anyone is welcome to agree or disagree about anything in my list.

    Hi guys

Hey! It's good to hear that you enjoy being here on this forum. So do I. :) I also think it's a good forum.

I'm speaking as a Mod now. However, while it's not a hard/fast Rule, our Mods (long before us new ones appeared) have always discouraged on-forum comparisons between us and other forums. Lots of people bring grievances here from other forums, etc, and it's just 'bad form' to allow any of it to carry on here.

We've heard reports from our own members (and Mods) who belong to more than one forum that OUR forum's shortcomings are often aired on other forums. I think we can rise above that here. Each forum is a law unto itself.

If anybody can offer suggestions on how we can do stuff 'better' than other forums, please feel free to PM one of the Mods, and we'll discuss it among ourselves. Several of our Mods are members of other forums as well, so we'll be aware of some of the things that get mentioned here. We also do appreciate hearing what we have done well, by the way. It's just that an open thread like this can easily turn into a conflagration.

I fear that this thread—while well-intentioned—IS potentially flammable. Consequently, I'm closing it to further responses. But thanks for the good vibes. Much appreciated.
