    The Big Debate.

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Heather Louise, Dec 21, 2007.

Ok, so here goes the all important question. There is a shop called Primark. How do you pronounce it? Either

    pr-eye-mark

    or

    pr-ee-mark

Now don't get angry about it people, it is just a word but we must know the answer :p :D

Well you are so getting a Christmas card this year. I'll explain a bit more about it shall I. There has beed an ongoing battle between the Preyemarkers (including me) and the Preemerkers. Our arguement is, look how it is spelt, of course you say 'eye'. But they say, look at the Grande Prix. Either way, t'is a big arguement everytime anyone says the name so though I's ask around here. :D

since they're selling stuff, i'd assume they meant it to be said as 'prime-ark'... the emphasis on 'prime' to imply they're the best of whatever...

I've always believed that when you have two vowels separated by a consonant, you say the name of the first vowel. In this case it would indeed be 'eye'.

Pr-eye-mark definately.. look how it's spelt..
Can i ask is grand prix the only word that is an example of pronouncing it differently?
Because pesronally i think it's the only word that breaks the rule of pronounciation anyway.

'prix' is only pronounced 'pree' because it's a french word and that's the proper french pronunciation...

so, if the 'primark' name is french, the first syllable is pronounced 'pree-'... but if it's english, it's 'pry-'... 'nuff said?

I though it was a dutch shop, or swedish. or somewhere like that.

That might be why some of us call is pr-ee-mark, being so close to Scotland, now you mention it.

Then the Irish can't spell. just like the Americans.
Why does everybody want to change the spelling of English words.

Why does everybody want to bash the Americans? We're not all bad (I dislike being thrown into a negative stereotype, especially when you don't know me and I'm not even part of the conversation yet).

Prime-ark. It just sounds better. My two cents.

Odenschild I am sorry if you thought I was bashing Americans.
I don't bash anyone unless they deserve it.
I do tease but never seriously.
I bring up the spelling because when I was in school our teachers made a point of
saying that it was wrong to not put the u in neighbour. Americans can do what they
want but you will learn it correctly.
When you have that drilled into your brain for 13 years you either joke about it or get really peeved. I decided to joke.
    No offence was meant.

thank you adamant. boy is my face red
