    Characters and Sensitive Topics

Discussion in 'Research' started by Hippophile, Jan 12, 2023.

For my specific scenario, I'm trying to write two characters, one with a below-the-knee amputation and one with a past alcohol addiction.

    Fostering also plays a role.

Thankfully, I know people with experiences in some of these topics, so I can consult them and/or use whatever I've learned from their stories.

But there are certain questions that I don't feel comfortable asking because I'm not particularly close to those people.

I want to approach these sensitive topics with as much care as I can. I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for websites or sources that I could use to learn more about said topics, more about the day-to-day intricacies and what it would truly be like for my characters?

Tell the people you know that your are researching characters for a writing project, and ask if they would be willing to help. If they know up front the reasons for they questions they shouldn't be offended.

They'd probably be glad to share their experience and help.

I would just suggest when you ping your friends don’t assume they will be super sensitive. You know them better than we do, so your discretion is king. In my experience honesty and and transparency is king. Be wary of beating around the bush.
