    hole in a gum

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by erebh, Apr 25, 2013.

Does anyone know the name of the hole left in a gum when a tooth is removed?

Please don't say cavity, I'm looking for better - thanks

I don't think there's a noun for it. It probably be better to say what kind of tooth is missing i.e. canine tooth, wisdom tooth, etc.

Yes, it is a socket. That's why they call it "dry socket"...

The socket is the recess in the jawbone where the roots extend. I would guess what you're looking for is a gum cavitation or gingival cavitation. there may be other words than cavitation, though, depending on the cause and whether it is infected.

Damn, would've said socket too. Gum cavitation or gingival cavitation would look sort of clunky, but if that's the correct term, then...

I do wonder what erebh is writing based on his grammar questions. At this point I know it includes spears and missing teeth.

There's a gruesome, horribly detailed description waiting to happen right there. I'd opt for more than just one word...

    .
Assuming it's not a disease issue, then a hole in the gum left by an extracted tooth is... a hole in the gum, or extraction hole.

Googling produced diddly as a dental term.

HAHA! Imagine a morgue full of corpes, some human, some vampire, some lycan. A quick way to spot a dead vampire is to open the mouth, look for signs of fangs, or a hole where fangs can sprout...

    Well spotted KaTrian...
