    was or were?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Tyler Danann, Apr 6, 2014.

I know that 'were' is for singular and 'was' is for plural but what about two words in the following manner:

'The food and fuel were / was (?) in 55 gallon drums...'

My feeling is it's were to describe the two words separately but I'm still a bit 'errrm' about it.

take off the 'the' and you'll see there's really no other choice that makes sense...
