    Logging out?

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by scarlettt, Jan 19, 2007.

I'm positive this is going to seem like a retarded question, but where is the log out button?

Either I'm blind, or it doesn't exist on my wee PC. Help.

Go to LINKS and hit log out.

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us, like me, lol.

Hey I didn't even know that so you've helped me. Does that mean I've still appeared as on the site even when the site isn't even up on my screen?

yeah - took me ages to find the 'give reputation' and the 'rate thread' functions - there are couple of bits in the design that could do with an explanation thread on sticky. Let's smile at the mod's and try and persuade them to write one with promises of booze.

The log out button may not work for some users. I'm not sure why. If that's the case try clearing your cookies.

No. The site automatically logs you off after a certain amount of inactivity, usually about a half hour. So, you don't show up anymore after you haven't done anything for a half hour.

If you have your browser set to remember you, when you come back, you automatically log back in and start showing up again.

It doesn't log me out on my computer. But then again, I don't see why you need to log out. When you get down to it, why do you need to?

Sorry to be contrary, but I think it does, you just don't see it happening.

You do disappear from the active users list when you haven't been around for a bit.

You disappear from the list, yes, but you are still on. When you boot up your computer and come back to the site, you are still logged on to your profile.

I think the main reason someone might want to log out is if they're using a public computer - for whoever asked.

Was that a "Oh sorry nevermind" or a "ugh, he doesn't get it, just nevermind"?

And at Lpspider: Okay, it makes sense now. I feel dumb for asking that question. =P Thanks for the answer.

    The latter.

When you have the "remember me" option checked, the forum does log you out, but it keeps a cookie in your browser. When you first try to load writingforums.org, the site checks the cookie first, finds that you have a stored set of user information, and automatically logs you in. This happens before the main page even loads.

Between the time after you leave and the time when you log back in, the system does log you out. In the system's perspective, you don't remain logged in the entire time.

I'd say "trust me on this," but that usually ends up indicating the opposite of what it's intended to convey.
