I'm new here, how's it going?

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Penfalcon17, Apr 18, 2009.

hi, my "name" is Penfalcon17. I came here for 2 reasons

1 - this site looks like a place where people actually replies to your posts

2 - this site is professional and more out there. it seems like an ideal place to show off my works in progress.

okay, now that I have introduced myself, it would be awesome to get a few hello's and introductions from some of you. don't worry, I won't bite. all I want to do is show you guys my works, just sit back and relax when you talk to me, I'm one of the most reasonable people in the world. :D

Hello Penfalcon, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

so this means I can't post a few chapters of my story without it being copyrighted? smart I admit, but doesn't that cost money to copyright a story?

No. You own the copyright on a story as soon as you have a completed draft. Copyright registration is another matter entirely.

What the rule means is you cannot post something for review that was written by someone else, even with that person's permission. Not your father's stories, nor your son's, nor something you picked up on the Internet and made a few changes to.

The latter case would be plagiarism, and is grounds for an immediate and permanent ban. It is important to have a working knowledge of international copyright law. This site has a zero tolerance policy on copyright infringement.

I'm not saying this to scare you off, only to stress the importance of only posting your own writing. As writers, we should always respect the intellectual property of our peers.

that's neat lynneandlynn, sounds like a good suspense (if I may assume)

mine is about a guy who is on the verge of making the decision of being a deity, that's what the first out of all 5 books is about anyway. I love my book, it has so many neat things about it, I'll show you when I'm done transferring from a wordpad document to a microsoft word document where it will have almost no flaws!
