    Novel Curating a chapter

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by Richach, Nov 3, 2019.

When creating a chapter, what are your structural objectives, do you have a method?

So what I am talking about is:

Goals, plotpoints, exposition, resolution, character development, plot development or any number of things that you think are crucial.

IDK, still figuring it out on my new novel.
First one didn't have chapters, just randomly
sized chunks tagged to each MC that told the
    overall story.

Though I have taken on a similar approach to
chapter length that the Ladies in group do, at
around 3k (or less) per chapter.
Radically different from my never going to be
finished sequel novel to the first, where there
is one chunk that is about 10 .docx pages long,
    or about 8-9K.

One thing I have learned is to find natural, non-
cliffhanger style ending points for each chapter,
since that seems to be a bit gimicky to bait each
end chapter with such a framing device. So not
having too many cliffhanger style endings is a
good thing, since it won't make the story come off
as being mellow dramatic with unnecessary tension
built into it. It should all flow naturally and transition
    between each chapter fluidly.
    :)

Thanks for answering this tough question Cave Troll :)

Yes I too aim for about 3k per chapter although 4.5K would be easy enough, I like to leave room for adding missing elements.

It just seems that I spend a long time writing a story then boom! I forgot to mention what one of the main charcters looks like or I never described the scene where the whole story was based. (These are just made up examples).

When I first started writing on 17th December 2017, I wrote 42k words in four weeks. From a creative point of view it was very rewarding but as you may imagine, technically it was not upto scratch.

The quality has improved and the productivity has dropped. Clearly I want to maintain the quality but I feel that it has its place, hence why I am trying to devise a method or even a checklist I guess, before I become obsessed with the does and dont's and kill the creativity alltogether.

I think the most important reason for devising a method is to ensure the story as a whole stays on track.
