What was it like to be mixed race in the 2000s?

So for context, one of the main characters of my story plot is mixed race. He is half Indian and half Irish-Italian and lives in Virginia in the suburbs of Washington DC. The storyline takes place in the early-mid 2000s. I'm white, but I am wondering from anyone on here who may be mixed race, especially if they are half South Asian in particular, what was it like being mixed race in the 2000s? Did 9/11 have any effects on the way you were treated or perceived by society because of your race/ethnicity/religion? I remember hearing a really sad story about an Indian Sikh entrepreneur man in Arizona who was killed at a gas station in the days following September 11 because the shooter thought he was Arab. Did mixed race people face more prejudices at the time or was it better than like the really overt racism in the Jim Crow era and such?
