I'm trying to write fantasy novel, one thing I've mulled over the use of is the word embryo. I've read it in some webnovel adaption of some Chinese fiction and it doesn't really bother me. But in the context of lets say my protagonist would have to eat a dragons embryo, would that be offensive, or disgusting, or put off anyone? Basically how would you feel if you read a scene of that nature?
Haha, I'm not really surprised by that. I'm just trying to see how far I could push something like this, my western sensibilities can be a bit out of wack. I probably won't get into so much detail as to disgust the reader, as the picture is disgusting even for me. But how far would you visualise it if I just sort of used the word and brushed over it slightly?
If it's part of the culture to eat exotic delicacies like dragon eggs similar to balut, then there isn't anything strange about it. May not be for everybody, but it is part of your worlds culture if that is something they do. Would it be any less strange if they ate live octopus? They do in Korea, and it is dangerous considering they can lodge themselves in the throat with their suckers. So, as for your story just use enough to describe what it is, and the reader should get what you're trying to go for. Good luck and happy writing.
So it's just a dragons egg? Do they cook it or eat it raw? I don't see an issue in a fantasy setting if it's explained as being normal/civilized. There was a rare custom in parts of my country where a family would eat the placenta after a healthy birth, which is basically cannibalism! But I don't know if anyone still does it, even in remote areas.
