To sum it up, I have this character who is demisexual and I'm debating if I should give him a close friend who becomes his lover, or should I instead leave it at close friends? As far as I can tell, it wouldn't really affect the plot, but it might give way to a different side of his character. However, I'm also wondering if I should have this love interest/close friend be a boy or a girl. Any help would be appreciated!
sorta depends on whether you are interested in that side of his character. I always include romance in my books regardless of the core plot, simply because I love writing it. And if you are interested, then it might be best to think of ways of weaving it into the main plot so it does affect it. The best subplots should always contribute to the main plot, otherwise the subplot shouldn't be there. And this sort of subplot would take up a good chunk of time that I think it would be important it contributes to the main plot.
I have a vague idea for how that could work. Since my main character is going on a magical journey, maybe the love interest can go with him and help him cope with the death of his mother?
Write whichever one you'd feel most comfortable writing. Remember, if you're uncomfortable trying to write it, it may well be uncomfortable for readers to read it.
Is there something you see a lot of in pop cultural platonic relationships that you don't like and that you would like to see less of? Don't add anything to the story that doesn't support and bolster the goals of the story. If the relationship doesn't add anything, then don't include it. If the struggles and tribulations of the character's interaction don't have a profound impact on the outcome of the story, then there's no real point!
After considering whether or not it would be relevant, I'm thinking I shouldn't force in a romance plot. I despise when romance plots are forced in almost action movie I see, so I probably shouldn't do that. But, if I figure out a way to make it contribute rather than take away from the main plot, I'll add it in in that casr. Thank you all for your help
