More advice from an established author

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Joe Palmer, Jul 28, 2023.

I hardly ever read Prefaces etc. but last night I picked up a much thumbed collection by one of my favorite authors: Ashenden by Somerset Maugham. The preface gives his ideas on short story writing. You have to make allowances - it was written 100 years ago! - but it is well worth considering.

The machine stops, and other stories
Hi, I just read this thread and then went and googled the book in question. The little description that Wikipedia has to offer got me hooked from the first few sentences. I will be purchasing and reading this story as soon as I have finished the other ones I have on the waiting list!

    Regards,
    Phoenix

Yes, I read it, it's a great short story. Have a surprise or twist at the end, that gives me a sense of satisfaction and completion.
