    Prophetic dreams

    Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by ANT (Bar YOSEF), Dec 22, 2007.

    Is it cliched to feature a prophetic dream in a story or can it be useful still? In a new project im working on, the Supreme one sends warnings to the hero and i wanted it to stay cheeseless.

    I'm not against them, maybe because I have had such dreams myself, but since this is a fantasy novel, why not? Though, I'd suggest that if you can go on without them it's better. Or a vision, rather than a dream. Even if you use a dream, not more than once or twice. (Or base your novel off prophetic dreams). Hope I helped.

    Cheers- this new project is fantasy, about 2 saviours sent to free their people. They are twins who were separated due to a slaughter of children. One is a warrior and one is a peace loving prophet. The vision was of the mission revealed to the warrior.

    Its hard though as lots of different plots and subplots are intersecting, making it confusing.

    Just keep a track of the plots, and how are they interlinked, and you should be fine.

    Anyone any suggestions for the name i could use for the supreme one- i looked at hebrew and the titles ADONAI and ELOHIM sprang out but could i use them in a fantasy novel?

    I wouldn't suggest it, mainly because people might get angry.

    Maybe you could switch the names around, like Adonai could be Ianoda!

    ^-^;

    First off, go for the prophetic dreams, but don't make it obvious. Keep the prophetic-ness to a minimum- symbolism can work wonders. As for the name of the god of the world, I'd keep away from it. Leaving something unnamed tends to make it seem more important/ dangerous (Voldemort for an obvious example), and if you're going to name him/her/it you're probably going to have to figure out the rest of the mythology. My suggestion- pick out something like 'the great one' or 'the lord' or 'tallest' (small invader zim joke there). Good luck.

    Man. Say that stuff in a PM if you REALLY REALLY NEED TO. Don't block up threads with half-line posts like that. It's annoying.

    Could the prophecy involve an actual depiction of events or symbols, or prople the charcter knows saying cryptic passages.

    The parts of your soul you refuse to recognize.
    I'm all for using dreams in writing, if, and it's a big IF, they're left vague as hell.
    As for the Names of God: http://www.ldolphin.org/Names.html. Although, I know little of Islamic names for God.
