Don't be silly. I discovered Australian soaps when I was living in, of all places, Berlin. We got the SSVC (Services Sound and Vision Corporation) in our barracks. That's the service that - at the time - brought UK television to Her Majesty's troops stationed abroad. Home & Away* and Neighbors, circa '89-'93, along with, of course, East Enders, Coronation Street, etc. etc. I missed it all so much when I got back to the States. * I still remember the kerfuffle caused when Debra Lawrance replaced Vanessa Downing as Pippa on Home & Away.
