I'm looking for some book recommendations for a preteen girl who loves to read. Because she loves to read and reads a lot her reading level is pretty high, but at the same time she's still a kid. So, I'm looking for age appropriate stories that she will be excited to read. And I even think a series could be good. I'm hoping to find some new or recent releases. She's very smart, but still very innocent. She does like girly things like clothes, hair, and (playing around with) makeup. She likes to dance and draw. But I would say her favorite activity is reading. I've been sort of mentoring this child, taking her to museums, art shows, and bookstores. I know she will get a lot of presents from her family, but they are leaving it up to me to find a few books. I want to find something that will get her excited to read it. Again, she already loves reading, but I really want it to be a good Xmas gift. Thanks is advance for any suggestions.
What genre/genres does she like? I dont know much about youth services, but I'm aware of what gets checked out a lot and the reviews on big book lists
I'm not really sure about genre. I think either reality-based fiction or if it's genre maybe dealing with princesses or girly type magic could work. Your suggestions are very appreciated. Thanks.
Lovely War (2019) by Julie Berry Genres: YA/Historical/Romance/Magical Realism Duel narratives of two young lovers during WWI and the Greek Gods of Love and War (and the question of why Love and War are destined together for all eternity) Warrior Girl Unearthed (2023) by Angeline Boulley Genres: YA/Mystery Young Native American (Anishinaabe) girl and her quest to take back indigenous stolen artifacts and return them to their tribal lands where they are sacred. I haven't read this one... but I read Firekeeper's Daughter to which this book is a sequel. It doesn't follow Firekeeper's Daughter, but the MC of this one was in elementary school during the events of the previous book and was only a side character. In this book, she is a preteen/teen and is the main character. While I REALLY enjoyed the first book, the subject matter may be a bit too dark and "adult"-- I went to the author talk for this one and some parents in the audience questioned the age that this book was meant for. Warrior Girl Unearthed seems on par with target audience (which, I didn't read because it did seem too YA to me). but you make the judgment call!) Lightfall graphic novel series by Tim Probert Middle Grade-YA Fantasy Two friends go on a quest to restore/protect the light (literal light, not spiritual/figurative) to cities while a dark force tries to eat the light and thus dooming all. A Childrens and Teen room librarian recommended it to me and its on my TBR list lol I may have more later... but these were just some off the top of my head
@J.T. Woody -- I ended up picking up book 1 and 2 in The Keeper of the Lost Cities series. I hope she hasn't read them yet. Are you familiar with those books? I still want to get her another book. Probably a stand alone. Do you know of something really new that's out now? I really want to find something good that I can be pretty sure she hasn't read yet.
Ah, thats a middle grade book. Im even less familiar with those. If you go to readingmiddlegrade.com and click their Book List tab, the first link (as of me writing this) is "100 Exceptional Middle Grade Books to Read in 2023" The other tabs, you can see book recs by age and book recs by grade. That may help
