Just wondering if anyone could give me illegal firearms 101. I have googled and even shopped for them online but I'm so confused. I don't have a clue about guns but my character has several of them. Based in Australia. Mobster/gangster weapons both hand guns and.... long... ones. What would be a common firearm circulating the black market? A firearm likely to be found in the basement of a mafia house. Thank you in advance very much
Depends. Do they have the serial numbers scraped off? In the Crime/Action movies the most popular weapons are the Mac-10 and the UZI. Though mobsters would have a proper arsenal ranging from various pistols, rifles, shotguns, and automatic assault rifles/SMGs/machine pistols. (Gotta have the proper tool for all of your criminal needs). It all comes down to your Mobs 'style', that would be a good way to understand and recommend weapons based on that. It would be highly cliche if they all ran around with Russian Military surplus AK-47s because they are cheap and easy to procure. Now don't go looking for an illegal arms dealer, cause I don't think going to prison would be a fun (or good idea), but you can pretty much get anything you want (outside of some of the hightech military hardware). So in theory if your Mob wants to go rolling down the streets in a tank, they could if they wanted to pay for the tank and the munitions. It just all depends on the needs of your Criminal Organization. Basically within a small amount of limitations due to inability to get a hold of experimental/ hightech/and most military vehicles (naval ships, fighter planes, etc). Your little syndicate can have a whole slew of toys to play with.
In order to understand how it works, I did a little research on the Dark Web, since it's not illegal in and of itself (it was invented as a secure line for whistleblowers), there is plenty of legit sites explaining that. It's a heavily encrypted website that uses software as a key to access it. The thing I'll also note is that Australia X-rays every single piece of post that comes in for contraband with the same tech as airports use (so liquids, organics, metal, wood and fabric show up in different colours on screen). There are two alternatives to talking to an illegal arms merchant (aside from what's already been said, they wouldn't want you blowing the whistle on how they smuggle in their goods): -Looking for smugglers in the true crime section of a library/book shop -Going to the police station and see if an officer will talk to you about cases that are already solved and closed.
