Does anyone have experience with writing a video game?

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Bearprint, Apr 20, 2017.

It could be useful for an aspiring developer/writer like me.

Nope but I have read about it in computer fora.
Totally different from a novel or short story.

None at all, but what kind of video game are you making? Story driven games seem to be rare nowadays, I'd love to see them make a comeback!

Walking simulator with mythology... storydriven games are still out there, you just have to look. RPG-games are great to tell a story, and they are quality these days. The pointandclick-genre has also gotten somewhat of a renaissance.

I do some writing for a small new indie group right now. They're working on their debut PC title.

If youre looking for a story based one, i would highly recommend the Witcher 3. Its based of a series of novels by a Polish author. Best game I ever played, with an amazing story!

When writing for a video game, the genre and the gameplay matter alot. The story needs to be able to fit into that genre. An open world game requires a story thats not linear, but more broken into parts. Needs a rich world filled with history to explore. Genre of the game will guide how you write and how your story develops.
