    Blank Verse

Discussion in 'The Craft of Writing Poetry' started by Sayso, Apr 19, 2007.

Blank verse is poetry that has been written in unrhymed iambic pentameter (thats five feet, with a foot being an unstressed beat followed by a stressed beat).
William Shakespeare wrote most of his plays in blank verse.

A good example of blank verse is Robert Frosts 'Birches' poem. Here are the first few lines followed by a link to the rest.

When I see birches bent to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay

Saying that though, it doesn't always have to be in that set meter. Others are acceptable to some.
